Circle Descriptions:
Current Issues in Higher Ed : Topics will be based on input from circle members and on materials from recent books and the Chronicle of Higher Education." We welcome input!
Basic Classroom
Issues : This group will discuss basic
classroom issues such as attendance, types and numbers of assignments,
interactions with students, campus resources for faculty and students, etc. I
will share short readings and input from colleagues here at SFA and on other
campuses. The group will decide the topic of focus each month, but questions /
issues may be brought to the circle for discussion even if they don't fit that
topic.
Challenges and Developing New Approaches when Teaching Online : In every classroom, we face challenges or periodically want to try something new. This circle will bring together current online instructors (and those who are developing online courses) so that they can share challenges and possible solutions. Members of the circle are also encouraged to bring ideas / approaches they want to try or develop for their online courses, and continue to share updates as those activities / new approaches are implemented. Short articles that relate to the topics brought forward by the group members’ projects and challenges will be shared in order to further broaden the number of perspectives “brought to the table” for discussion. A listserv will be created so that group members can help each other without waiting for the next face-to-face meeting.
The Book Circle led by Sue Whatley. Sue has chosen the best-selling book The Last Lecture as the book for the circle to examine. Part of the focus beyond the text itself will be on how faculty can better relate through real-life situations to their students.
The Parenthood Juggle: During our on-campus, face-to-face meetings, this group will discuss challenges and share practical advice about juggling family responsibilities with professional career demands in academia. We also have ongoing and informal "play in the park" times (e.g. Sundays at 4:30 at Maroney Park) and some social events so that families can get to know each other. Join if you have children or are even just thinking about starting a family in the future. Soon to come: an online web site that has FAQs and links to additional resources.
