Placing Student Achievement First

Academic Achievement:

In order to increase academic achievement and student success, we will

A.  Continue to raise the quality of our academic programs by

Action 1 - providing broader-based oversight of the general education curriculum

Action 2 - strategically developing distance education programs

Action 3 - conducting thorough reviews of all academic programs

B.  Ensure that support programs are in place to help students succeed by

Action 4 - increasing the success level of developmental education programs

Action 5 - improving mentoring/advising programs

Action 6 - improving on-line degree audit capabilities

Action 7 - increasing support and recognition for academically strong students

Campus Community:

In order to create a more supportive, engaged and diverse living and learning community, we will

C.  Make cultural diversity an integral part of the educational experience by

Action 8 - recruiting an ethnically and culturally diverse student population

Action 9 - recruiting an ethnically and culturally diverse faculty and staff

Action 10 - expanding international student programs

Action 11 - expanding service learning and community involvement opportunities for students

D.  Improve the on-campus residential experience by

Action 12 - reducing the number of credits required for students to live off campus and make more "apartment-style" living available on campus

Action 13 - using the Student Center renovation as an opportunity to create a "town square" for the campus

Action 14 - restructuring the meal plan to better serve the students' needs

Action 15 - increasing weekend activities for students

E.  Generate a campus-wide emphasis on quality service by

Action 16 - making university Web sites more informative, user-friendly and professional looking

Action 17 - providing workshops in service delivery and information access for employees

Action 18 - obtaining more feedback from students on educational, support and residential services

Action 19 - creating information centers to more quickly and accurately respond to inquiries

Distinctive Identity:

In order to enhance the university's distinctive identity, we will

F.  Emphasize the personal attention students receive at SFA by

Action 20 - increasing participation in and success of SFA101 and JackCamp

Action 21 - increasing senior-year capstone / transition programs

Action 22 - providing more assistance to students experiencing problems such as anxiety disorders, binge-drinking, sexually transmissible diseases and eating disorders

G.  Emphasizing the integrated university experience offered at SFA by

Action 23 - increasing links between extracurricular activities and the university's mission and core values

Action 24 - establishing a regular university-sponsored lecture series

Action 25 - encouraging all students starting their very first semester to participate in co curricular or extracurricular organizations

Action 26 - creating more residence-based learning communities

Action 27 - turning more class projects into public learning opportunities

Action 28 - establishing a "Campus Visual Identity Committee"

H.  Develop a program of specific areas of mastery which all SFA graduates will possess at the time of graduation by

Action 29 - creating a implementation advisory committee

Action 30 - providing the campus with further information about the masteries approach

Action 31 - adopting a set of masteries to expect of all SFA graduates

Action 32 - putting in place methods to assess the degree to which masteries are in fact learned

External Engagement:

In order to increase engagement with the external community, we will

I.  Communicate more effectively with external groups by

Action 33 - disseminating more widely the success stories of SFA

Action 34 - increasing the use of alumni/employer advisory boards

Action 35 - conducting frequent university-community conferences

Action 36 - holding more events that bring people to the campus

Action 37 - improving visitor information and campus building information

J.  Increase involvement with regional economic development efforts by

Action 38 - increasing joint projects with businesses, governments and development agencies

Action 39 - more closely integrate university and city / county publicity, recruiting and Web links

Action 40 - develop a forum through which university faculty seeking community consulting opportunities or service learning projects can meet with community businesses seeking assistance

K.  Initiate, continue and enhance partnerships with other regional academic institutions by

Action 41 - increasing partnerships with regional school districts

Action 42 - increasing joint agreements with area community colleges and universities

Action 43 - hosting information-sharing meetings of high school, community college and SFA faculty teaching in the same discipline

Action 44 - better meeting the continuing education needs of the people in the region

L.  Work to improve regional health care and quality of life by

Action 45 - broadening alliances with area health care providers

Action 46 - helping health care providers identify and assist underserved populations in East Texas

Action 47 - working with city and county leaders to maintain and improve area recreational facilities and cultural activities

Support:

In order to improve support for teaching, research and service, we will

M.  Recruit, develop and reward well-qualified faculty and staff by

Action 48 - devoting more resources to recruiting new faculty and staff

Action 49 - improving faculty and staff compensation

Action 50 - creating a faculty excellence center

Action 51 - improving the first year experience for new faculty

Action 52 - increasing support for attendance at professional meetings

Action 53 - expanding education discounts for university employees

N.  Provide the equipment, technology and support necessary for excellence in teaching, research and service by

Action 54 - providing a technology support structure for students

Action 55 - increasing and simplifying the technology support structure for faculty and staff

Action 56 - improving communication technology infrastructure

Action 57 - improving classroom and lab equipment

Internal Effectiveness:

In order to improve internal effectiveness, we will

O.  Increase the quality and quantity of communication between and among all levels of the university by

Action 58 - establishing a policy of prompt, open, two-way organizational communication

Action 59 - making news from campus departments and other university entities easily accessible from a common online site

Action 60 - creating an Employee Council

P.  Make organizational structure and decision making more open and coordinated by

Action 61 - reviewing the number and responsibilities of upper-level university administrators

Action 62 - reviewing the number and responsibilities of university committees

Action 63 - doing the SFA budget in a more inclusive and transparent way

Q.  Increase the use and effect of university-level assessment by

Action 64 - improving assessment of general education [see No. 1 above]

Action 65 - improving assessment of developmental education

Action 66 - expanding the institutional research staff

Recruitment and Retention:

In order to increase student enrollment and retention, we will

R.  Recruit more effectively students who meet and surpass our admission requirements by

Action 67 - recruiting more academically able students by making better use of faculty, students and alumni in communicating the advantages of SFA

Action 68 - working to increase both the number of graduate programs offered by the university and the enrollment in those programs

Action 69 - providing more courses, programs, scheduling and support services consistent with the needs of older students

Implementation:

In order to implement this strategic plan, we will

S.  Make the strategic plan a vital element in SFA's operation by

Action 70 - establishing a strategic planning oversight committee

Action 71 - using the strategic plan as a basis for budgetary decisions
