Acosta-Taylor Site Excavations
Dr. Leslie Cecil conducted an archaeological field school with eight SFASU students at the Acosta-Taylor site in 2008. This site is part of one of the first settlements of Nacogdoches and was occupied until the mid-20th century. During the field season we mapped the area, conducted full excavations of the southeast corner of the property, and began the excavations of the two water wells.
We excavated pottery dating to the late 1700s to recent plastics, but the overwhelming majority of the excavated artifacts were metal (we were excavating the floor of a metal shop). Additionally, we excavated the top of two water wells and found a counter-weight and a pet cat burial. During the 2008-2009 academic year, we will further excavate the water well closest to the Durst-Taylor house.
