Lifeguard Certification Registration Deadline
Register in the Campus Rec Administration Office by 7 p.m. | Cost $135

Want to be an American Red Cross Certified Lifeguard? Today is the last day to register for Campus Rec's Lifeguard Certification Class. The course will take place from 4 to 10 p.m. Friday, April 15, and from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. Saturday, April 16, and Sunday, April 17, in the HPE Indoor Pool and Room 202. Lifeguard certifications are a great way to obtain a position as a lifeguard or expand your personal knowledge of the pool and pool safety. Each class is taught by a certified American Red Cross instructor and will include a lifeguarding manual, rescue mask and certification card. Each participant must attend each day of the training to be eligible to pass. Please bring a swimsuit, towel and a pen each day. Stop by or call the Campus Rec Administration Office at (936) 468-3507 to register!

  "Continuity and change in Azerbaijan’s energy diplomacy"
presented by Murad Ismayilov

A research fellow at the Azerbaijan Diplomatic Academy at Baku, Ismayilov holds degrees from and has taught at Baku State University. He holds a Master of Studies in international relations from the University of Cambridge. Ismayilov recently served as manager of a project funded by a U.S. Democracy Commission Grant titled “United in Diversity and Building Trust for our Common Future: Azerbaijan’s Political Identity in Transition.” He also contributed to a project, funded by the Volkswagen Foundation and conducted by the Research Centre for East European Studies at the University of Bremen, that studied the energy sector and political stability of regimes in Kazakhstan and Azerbaijan. Ismayilov is a guest of Dr. Michael Tkacik, professor of government and director of the SFA School of Honors.
   
  Stone Fort Wind Quintet concert

The Stone Fort Wind Quintet, an ensemble of Stephen F. Austin State University music faculty, will present a concert at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, April 12, in Cole Concert Hall as part of the SFA School of Music’s Cole Performing Arts Series. Joining the quintet members—flutist Christina Guenther, oboist John W. Goodall, clarinetist Christopher Ayer, bassoonist Susan Nelson and horn player Charles Gavin—will be SFA faculty members Nathan Nabb, saxophone; Fred J. Allen, bass clarinet; and Gary Wurtz, trumpet. Tickets are $5 for adults, $4 for seniors, $2.50 for faculty/staff and $2 for students.

"Leaving an Impression One Step at a Time" with Alan Bean
Archie McDonald Speaker Series

Apollo 12 astronaut Alan Bean, the fourth man to walk on the moon and an award-winning artist, will be the featured guest at the 2011 installment of the Archie McDonald Speaker Series. The reception begins at 6:00 p.m. (tickets required, available online) and the speech begins at 7:30 p.m. Free passes to the speech are available at the Student Involvement Center in the Baker Pattillo Student Center or at the Nacogdoches Visitor Center in downtown Nacogdoches.
   
  SFA Percussion Ensemble annual spring concert

The SFA Percussion Ensemble will present its annual spring concert at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, April 14, in Cole Concert Hall. Under the direction of SFA Associate Professor Scott Harris, the 10 students will present a wide variety of chamber and large ensemble works, including a novelty work that uses only music stands as instruments. The concert is a joint presentation of the SFA College of Fine Arts and School of Music. Tickets are $5 for adults, $4 for seniors, $2.50 for faculty/staff and $2 for students.

SGA's Big Idea Deadline

"What's your BIG IDEA for 2011" is an SGA sponsored initiative designed to bring life to the BIG IDEAS of students or organizations at SFA. SGA understands that many "BIG IDEAS" exist in the minds of all Lumberjacks; however, the funds are not always available to fulfill them. THE BIG IDEA provides an opportunity for financial assistance on behalf of SGA for projects that can serve the student body and the SFA campus well into the future. A monetary grant of $2,011 will be given to the student or organization with the best idea for making SFA a better place to attend school. Applications are available in the SGA office, 3rd floor BPSC, and are due in the SGA office by 5 p.m. Friday, April 15.

   
Project Unity Step Show

The Office of Multicultural Affairs, student organizations and Greek life will host their annual Project Unity Step Show. Unlike traditional step shows, Project Unity Step Show teams are intertwined teams from the diverse Greek council (Interfraternity Council, Pan-Hellenic, Multicultural Greek Council and National Pan-Hellenic Council) and SFA organizations. Doors open at 5 p.m., and the show starts at 6 p.m. Presale tickets are $7, and admission at the event is $10. SFA Garden's Spring Plant Sale

This plant sale fundraiser benefits the SFA Gardens and its educational programs that reach over 15,000 students ages one to 100 on a yearly basis. A wide variety of hard to find “Texas tough” plants will be available including new introductions, Texas natives, heirlooms, perennials and exclusive SFA introductions. 4th Annual Earth Day Celebrations

Earth Day is an outdoor festival sponsored by SFA Campus Recreation's Outdoor Pursuits program and community entities including The Healthy Nacogdoches Coalition, the Pineywoods Native Plant Center and the SFA Mast Arboretum. Our motivation for hosting Earth Day is to instill a sense of environmental stewardship in the SFA student body and our local Nacogdoches community. In the beautiful setting of the PNPC, we will have information booths, presenters, organized activities for kids and all ages, food, music and much more. Earth Day will be presented alongside the SFA Spring Garden Gala Plant Sale, so we encourage you to come and enjoy both events. Join us in celebrating the Earth and learn some great ways to live simply and sustainably.

Sun-A Park, winner of the 2010 Schmidbauer Competition, will be the featured piano soloist on Sergei Rachmaninoff's Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini during the SFA Orchestra of the Pines' concert at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, April 16, in Cole Concert Hall. Also included on the program is Cèsar Franck's Symphony in D minor. Select string students from Pasadena Memorial High School in Houston will join the orchestra in presenting this piece. The concert is a joint presentation of the SFA College of Fine Arts, School of Music and Orchestra Series. It is sponsored in part by Nacogdoches Memorial Hospital and the Wedgeworth-Wright Endowment for the Arts.
