Green is the New Black is a recycled fashion show hosted by the International Interior Design Association (IIDA). We want YOU to create a design for the show. The SFA College of Fine Arts and School of Music will present two faculty members, vocalist David Howard and pianist Andrew Parr, in Songs of Robert Schumann at 7:30 p.m. Monday, Jan. 31, in Cole Concert Hall. The program includes two famous song cycles by Schumann that display his synthesis of poetry and music. English supertitles will be projected. This is a tribute to the music greats that made Motown what it is. Music includes hits from The Supremes, The Jackson Five and Marvin Gaye.   SFA Wind Ensemble presents Welcome Home concert

The SFA Wind Ensemble will present its Welcome Home concert at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 1, in W.M. Turner Auditorium. The concert follows the band’s two-day tour of schools in Houston and East Texas. The program features music by American composers, including large works by Frank Ticheli and John Adams as well as Karl King’s “Barnum and Bailey’s Favorite March.” Tickets are $5 for adults, $4 for seniors, $2.50 for faculty/staff and $2 for students.

A successful garden begins with good soil, according to Dr. Leon Young, Stephen F. Austin State University agriculture professor and director of the SFA Soil, Plant and Water Analysis Lab. Young will present “Soils in Your Garden” from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 3, in the Agriculture Building, Room 110 on Wilson Drive. Young will discuss the basics of soil pH and the use of lime, fertilization and soil testing. One-night screening of Digital Nation: Life on the Virtual Frontier

As part of its monthly independent film series, the SFA School of Art and Friends of the Visual Arts will present a one-night screening of Digital Nation: Life on the Virtual Frontier at 7 p.m. Friday, Feb. 4, at The Cole Art Center @ The Old Opera House, 329 E. Main St. in downtown Nacogdoches. Douglas Rushkoff’s documentary, which was filmed for PBS’ “Frontline,” explores the advantages and disadvantages of our digital culture. Admission is free. Come along with a young woman on her personal quest to find a special place in the night sky. She recalls her imaginative childhood adventures on Mars and the discovery of her "birthday star" which leads her to a lifelong fascination with the heavens. She shares her telescope views of the Moon, Mars, Jupiter and Saturn with us; points out stars and constellations; and encourages everyone to make the time to look up, even if stargazing in urban areas with light pollution.
