Campus Rec Outdoor Center

Last day for registration. Cost is $20, and event will be held on Saturday, Oct. 9. Put on a pair of overalls and head out to a local farm for the day! Learn firsthand the tips and tricks that farmers use to bring organic vegetables and fruits from the farm to your grocery store. Lunch will be provided. Study abroad to Germany and Belgium interest meeting
4 p.m. | Liberal Arts North, Room 102

Travel to Germany and Belgium to explore contemporary German culture and politics. In Berlin, we'll visit museums to explore Germany's interpretation of its own recent history and reunification, see Sachsenhausen Concentration Camp for perspectives on the Holocaust, examine multiculturalism and diversity in modern Germany via encounters with Turkish immigrants to Germany, explore remnants of the Berlin Wall, and visit key political parties. In Franfurt, we'll explore contemporary German architecture, European Central Bank and other sites of interest. Germany's role in the European Union will be the focus of visits to Brussels, Belgium. We will also examine Germany's role in NATO. Faculty sponsors of the trip are Dr. Louise Stoehr, modern languages, and Dr. Steven Galatas, government.

SFA School of Theatre to present John Cariani’s Almost, Maine
7:30 p.m. | Tuesday, Oct. 5 – Saturday, Oct.9
W.M. Turner Auditorium

Set in the mythical town of Almost, Maine, this 2004 comedy has broken box office records and made “Ten Best” lists all across the country. It explores the mysteries of the human heart through a series of vignettes in which the town’s residents fall in and out of love in unexpected and hilarious ways, explained SFA professor Allen Oster, the play’s director. Tickets are $12 for adults and $6 for seniors, students and SFA faculty/staff.

   
  Guest artist recital with Ellen Johnson
7:30 p.m. | Cole Concert Hall

Ellen Johnson is an adjunct professor of flute at Concordia University in Austin. The recital is a part of the SFA School of Music’s Cole Performing Arts Series. Johnson will perform on a Baroque flute, called a traverso, as well as the modern flute. Joining her on stage will be SFA Assistant Professor of flute Christina Guenther and SFA accompanist Geneva Fung on piano and harpsichord. Tickets are $5 for adults, $4 for seniors, $2.50 for SFA faculty/staff and $2 for students.

Global Gateway to Mexico

The Office of International programs is hosting the first presentation in a monthly series of Global Gateway events. An international student from SFA will make a 30-minute presentation on Mexican culture. Drinks and authentic Mexican food will be provided free of charge. National Depression Screening Day (NDSD)

The Department of Human Services-Rehabilitation & Counseling Programs will offer free anonymous depression screenings in recognition of National Depression Screening Day (NDSD). Screenings will be held from 2 to 6 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 7, in the lobby of the Human Services Telecommunications Building. Attendees will have the opportunity to complete a written self-assessment and talk one-on-one with a mental health counselor in training. Those who appear to need further evaluation will be given referrals to local treatment services. For more information, please call the SFA Counseling Clinic at (936) 468-1041.

SFA School of Art to open Message From Siberia with Reception
6 p.m. | The Cole Art Center, 329 E. Main St. in downtown Nacogdoches

The exhibition includes 25 works on paper by four nationally and internationally known Siberian artists. The show, which is one half of an art exchange between the SFA School of Art and the current director of the Moscow Bienale, will run through Tuesday, Nov. 23. Admission to the opening and gallery is free. Regular gallery hours are 12:30 to 5 p.m., Tuesday through Friday, and 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday. Celebrities, barbecue, a variety show and silent auction are all part of the scholarship fund-raiser, “A Piney Woods Home Companion: The Sequel,” presented by the SFA Music Preparatory Division at 6 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 9, in the SFA Grand Ballroom. Patterned after Garrison Keillor’s “A Prairie Home Companion,” the event will be emceed by former daytime television star Brad Maule, and the hilarious script that spoofs East Texas will feature music by Hollywood composer and lyricist John Dickson.
