SFA offers children’s optical illusion art workshop

Optical illusions will be the focus of a children’s art workshop to be offered by the School of Art from 4 to 6 p.m. Tuesday, March 22, at The Cole Art Center @ The Old Opera House.

Participants in the class, which is open to first through eighth graders, will view “Rufus Butler Seder: LIFETILES,” learning about Seder’s optical glass-tiled murals popularly known as “movies for walls.”

The students will then create their own optical illusions and artwork inspired by the exhibition, explained Dawn Stienecker, SFA lecturer of art education. She and SFA art education majors will teach the workshop.

Registration for each class is $5 and covers the cost of the materials and refreshments. Parents may pre-register by e-mailing Stienecker at stieneckdg@sfasu.edu and providing the child’s name and age.

The Cole Art Center is located at 329 E. Main St.

SFA orchestra to present 'Journey to Heaven' concert

For its "Journey to Heaven" concert at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, March 10, the SFA Orchestra of the Pines will perform Gustav Mahler's "Symphony No. 4 in G major."

"The concert's title is befitting of the symphony, as the work is Mahler's portrayal of and journey towards heaven," explained Gene H. Moon, director of orchestral activities at SFA and the orchestra's music director.

"We are happy to welcome back as a guest vocalist with the orchestra Ms. Debbie Berry, who will sing the soprano role in the final movement," Moon continued. read more

The BIG Event job request forms available!

Job Request Forms for The BIG Event are now live at www.sfasu.edu/thebigevent! SFA faculty and staff are eligible to apply for a job for students to complete during the third annual day of service, to be held Friday, April 29.

Potential projects include cleaning, yardwork, painting, etc. This day of service is NOT based on socio-economic need, but rather as a way for SFA students to say “thank you” to the campus and community for all of their support.

Anyone in the community is eligible to apply for a job, so apply for one and then pass the word along to local family and friends! For more information, please contact Jamie Bouldin, assistant director for leadership and service, at jfbouldin@sfasu.edu.

Glistening patio furniture: Apply a light coat of car wax before setting out your plastic or metal chairs for another season. The same slick stuff that keeps bugs from sticking to your hood will make furniture a breeze to clean and protect it from fading in the sun.
