New law requires universities to spell out syllabi

Students at Stephen F. Austin State University, along with students attending every other college and university across Texas, can soon expect to see more information online about their classes.

In order to better educate students on their class options, and to help lower dropout rates by providing students with the information they need to better understand what is expected of them, House Bill 2504 was passed in 2009 and is taking effect across Texas this fall. More

 

SFA professor travels to China to perform at 2010 World Expo

Nacogdoches resident Karen Jenlink received what she described as the "opportunity of a lifetime" last month when traveled to China to perform alongside several Central Texas chorales at the 2010 World Expo.

She said each of the chorales performed a series of individual concerts, but then came together at the end of their visit to debut Franz Josef Haydn's "Paukenmesse" with the Shanghai Philharmonic at the Oriental Art Center in Shanghai, an experience she said was one of the highlights of her life. More

 

SFA Watermelon Bash tomorrow

The Student Government Association would like to invite the entire campus to an annual summer tradition, the SFA Watermelon Bash. This event will be held at the SFA Statue and begin at 11:30 a.m. Tuesday, July 20. We will continue serving up cold watermelon, sodas and hot dogs while supplies last. Join members of the Student Government Association and Student Affairs Program staff as they celebrate the summer. This event is free and open to all. Gov. Perry appoints SFA student as one of five to the
OneStar National Service Commission

Gov. Rick Perry has appointed five members to the OneStar National Service Commission for terms to expire March 15, 2013. The commission works with the OneStar Foundation to further national service initiatives in Texas and administer the AmeriCorps Texas program.

Aranda Cooper of Nacogdoches is a graduate assistant for the Stephen F. Austin State University Office of Student Affairs. She is coordinator of Nacogdoches Service Saturday and co-coordinator of the Martin Luther King Day of Service and Big Event Service Project.

She is also a member of the Omicron Delta Kappa National Leadership Fraternity, a volunteer with Nacogdoches Habitat for Humanity, and a past member of the AmeriCorps National Civilian Community Corps and VISTA. Cooper received a bachelor’s degree and is currently pursuing a master’s degree in secondary education from SFA.

Accomplishments

Dr. Darrel Kniss, kinesiology and health science, has been appointed to the Texas School Health Advisory Council (TSHAC). The mission of the TSHAC is to provide assistance to the State Health Services Council in establishing a leadership role for Department of State Health Services in the support for and delivery of coordinated school health programs and school health services.
   
The SFA A Cappella Choir has been selected to perform at the 2011 conference of the Texas Music Educators Association February 9 through 12 in San Antonio. Of all the university choirs who submitted audition tapes, only two were invited to perform at the conference that serves over 10,000 Texas music educators. Dr. Tim King, SFA director of choral activities, said, “What a great honor it is to be selected for the convention.  More than this, what a wonderful opportunity for SFA and the School of Music to exhibit our tradition and musical standard to all the music educators in the state.”

Registration is still open for 4th through 9th graders to enroll in the Junior Jacks Acting Camp being held each weekday Monday, Aug. 2, through Friday, Aug. 13, and culminating with free public performances on Saturday, Aug. 13. Led by SFA theatre students under the direction of Assistant Professor Carolyn Conn, the free camps will be held at the Unity Church of Christianity, 2400 South St. Fourth through 6th graders will meet from 9 a.m. to noon, and 7th through 9th graders will meet from 1 to 5 p.m. Enrollment is limited, and at press time, three spaces remained in each age group. The R. W. Steen Library has rolled out a new library catalog called SteenFind. This new catalog will allow library users to search for books and other library materials faster and easier than ever before. SteenFind offers many enhanced features, including the ability to rate, review and tag any item in our catalog.

Other catalog features:
• Create lists of books, CDs and other materials for check out.
• Search results are automatically sorted by relevancy.
• Spelling suggestions are offered if you misspell a title, author or keyword.
• Search results are sorted by material type, fiction/nonfiction, series, person, location and other options.

The current catalog will still be available to search.

   
Calling Faculty Authors! The Teaching Excellence Center houses a library of faculty authored books. Our collection covers all disciplines at the university. If you have written a book in the past few years and would like to donate a copy to the Teaching Excellence Center, please contact Amanda at (936) 468-1831 or tec@sfasu.edu.
   
The Office of Student Affairs Programs is still accepting applications for its 2010-2011 Lumberjack Leadership Academy program. Current SFA students with at least a 2.5 GPA are highly encouraged to apply – no previous leadership experience is required. The LLA program, based in the Social Change Model of Leadership Development, includes retreats, workshops and the proposal and implementation of a service project. Download an application today! Jack Camp 2010 is looking for faculty/staff Jack Camp counselors for a day, and you could be one of them! Chosen faculty and staff members would help out with registration, staffing our parent's tent and welcoming students to their cabins. As a staff member you will also be introduced at our opening ceremony and enjoy dinner with the students. Transportation is provided to and from Camp Olympia.

Our Jack Camp sessions are August 16 and 20. If you are interested, we will leave campus at 8 a.m. and will be back on campus around 9 p.m. This is a great way to meet our new students and take a day to run around in the Texas sunshine! If you are interested, please e-mail Michael Preston, director of student affairs, at mpreston@sfasu.edu. We have about 20 spots available for each session, so space is limited!

   

Orientation sessions have begun! The remaining Orientation session dates are as follows: Freshman Sessions are July 22-23, July 29-30 and Aug. 5-6. Transfer Sessions are July 1 and Aug. 5-6.

College of Fine Arts Events and Exhibits

Want to help with the relief efforts in the Gulf? Visit "Save the Gulf: Olivia Bouler's Bird Illustrations" at The Cole Art Center @ The Old Opera House, 329 E. Main St., and purchase artwork by the 11-year-old New York artist who has single-handedly raised over $125,000 for relief funds by selling her art. Twenty-five illustrations and five prints are included in the exhibition the School of Art is presenting. A silent auction for the illustrations is still going on, and the prints are available for a set price. SFA's exhibition is Bouler's first one-person show and the first exhibition of her artwork for Gulf disaster relief.  All proceeds benefit not-for-profit organizations including the Sierra Club, National Wildlife Federation and the Audubon Society. The SFA School of Music’s 2010 Chamber Music in the Pines Festival, “Something for Everyone,” will consist of four concerts in Cole Concert Hall: “Something Old” at 7:30 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 7; “Something New” at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Aug. 10;  “Something Borrowed” at 7:30 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 13; and “Something Blue” at 2:30 p.m. on Sunday, Aug. 15. Each concert features SFA music faculty and guest artists. Tickets to individual concerts are $10 adult, $7.50 senior, $5 SFA faculty/staff and student. Series packages for all four concerts are $30 adult, $22.50 senior, $15 SFA faculty/staff and student.
