SFA co-ed cheer duet wins nationals

cheer teamThe SFA Large Co-Ed Cheerleading team completed one of its best showings at the Universal Cheerleaders Association (UCA) National Partner Stunt Championships by capturing a national title and placing five couples in the national top ten. The championship, which was held Jan. 15, at Walt Disney's Wild World of Sports Complex, included a finals which featured 20 partner teams from across the nation. SFA placed seven teams into the final competition.

Winning the national championship was sophomore Ashley Tucker and senior Tim Wegner. The couple began the competition by performing first and had to wait for 19 other couples before they knew their fate.

SFA partners sophomore Alli Pagnotta and junior Alec Heffron finished behind a team from the University of Louisville to take the third place trophy. SFA also had couples finish in 6th, 9th, 10th, 11th and 13th respectively. The competition featured couples from eight universities including Oklahoma State University, Western Kentucky, University of Oklahoma and Hawaii Pacific University.

The SFA cheer and dance teams return to competition at the NCA national championship in April. They will be in action during their annual show-offs at SFA's William R. Johnson Coliseum at 7 p.m. March 26.

Texas senator to visit campus today

kay baileySenator Kay Bailey Hutchison is visiting the SFA campus TODAY to deliver a legislative update from Washington, D.C., at 2:45 p.m. in the Student Center Spirit Lounge.

In 1993, Texans elected Kay Bailey Hutchison to the United States Senate in a special election, making her the first -- and, to date, the only -- woman elected to represent the state in the Senate. One year later, she was re-elected to a full six-year term. In 2000, she received more votes for her re-election to a second full term than any other statewide candidate had ever received. And in 2006, she was again re-elected by an overwhelming margin.

Please inform your students about the free TB Test Clinic:
8 to 11:30 a.m. and 1 to 4:30 p.m. • TODAY • Students taking the free test must return for the reading on Monday, Jan. 25, during the same times listed. Please be advised of the following: 1) Any student that is pregnant must have a note from her physician giving approval to take the test; 2) Any student that has had a positive test reading in the past will need to have a chest x-ray. Chest x-rays are done at the student’s expense, approximately $65. Please instruct these students also to come to the TB clinic to obtain an order for the x-ray; and 3) Any student that takes the test on Friday and fails to return on Monday for the reading will have to wait several weeks before the test can be repeated; and, due to the increased number of students that have failed to return on the proper day for the readings, we have increased the charge for a repeat test to $10. Want to take a gander at the shortened version of the test? The MSNBC version of the test is multiple choice; however, the actual test is presented orally to prospective citizens.
