The Lumberjack Walk and Roll Web site houses an interactive mapping application that was created to aid pedestrians and wheelchair users to find the most efficient routes throughout the SFA campus. It allows users to map out the best path to and from buildings and parking lots. If individuals are restricted to wheelchairs, the application will assist users to their desired destinations by directing them to the handicapped accessible entryways of all buildings and walkways. The Web site was created by SFA student Allison Bergman for a partial fulfillment for a master’s degree and advised by Dr. Darrel McDonald. SFA Food Service in Culinary Competition SFA Dining will host the ACE (Aramark Culinary Excellence) competition on Thursday, Feb. 18, in the East College Cafeteria. Seven Aramark chefs, including SFA’s Chef Dean, will be competing against one another for a chance to represent the Southwest region at a national competition in San Francisco later this year. The show, which is very much like something found on Food Network, allows competitors four hours from start to finish to create a three-course meal, all under $15 a plate. The contenders are given a list of items to choose from. Judging by SFA representatives will take place from 1 to 5 p.m., and students can let their voice be heard by voting on their favorite plate displays for the Student Choice Awards from 2:30 to 3 p.m. This is an open event, and anyone can stop by to show their support. The Department of Kinesiology and Health Science is hosting the Area 7 Special Olympics Basketball Competition Saturday, Feb. 20. The event will take place from 9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the Lucille Norton HPE Complex Gymnasium. Events will include Individual and Team Skills, 3-on-3 competition and 5-on-5 competition. Approximately 100 Special Olympic Athletes are expected to compete. Students, faculty and staff are encouraged to come by and cheer on all of the athletes. The Pink Zone with the Ladyjacks Join the Ladyjack basketball team and wear pink in support of Breast Cancer Awareness at 6 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 20, in the William R. Johnson Coliseum. Free admission with anyone wearing pink attire. ZTA will hand out pink promotional items to support the cause, as well. The WBCA Pink Zone® initiative is a global, unified effort for the Women's Basketball Coaches Association's (WBCA) nation of coaches to assist in raising breast cancer awareness on the court, across campuses, in communities and beyond.
Become a group mentor for The BIG Event, sponsored by the Department of Student Affairs and the SFA Volunteer Program! On Friday, April 23, hundreds of students will head out into the city and county to complete service projects as a BIG “thank you” to the community for its support of our students. Faculty and staff can take part by serving as a mentor for a team of students – faculty/staff mentors for previous days of service have commented that this is a great opportunity to work and interact with students outside the classroom. In addition, you will feel great about being able to give something back to the community. To participate, faculty or staff will need to attend a mandatory mentor meeting (either 4:30 p.m. on Thursday, April 15, or noon on Friday, April 16) as well as be available to participate in The BIG Event from 11:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. on Friday, April 23. (Hosoda-Ayer is the wife of Christopher Ayer, SFA associate professor of clarinet.) The program will include familiar works for four hands such as the Mozart Sonata and portions of Dvorak’s “Slavonic Dances,” as well as more recent works by Philip Glass and Terry Riley. Main St. Organized by the National Center for Children’s Illustrated Literature in Abilene, this retrospective by the prolific American husband and wife team includes illustrations for African folktales to Scandinavian epics, from fantasy to science fiction.
