Philadelphia Virtuosi Chamber Orchestra to open SFA's University Series

The Stephen F. Austin State University College of Fine Arts will open the University Series' 50th season of performances with the renowned Philadelphia Virtuosi Chamber Orchestra at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 14, in W.M. Turner Auditorium.

"Known for its innovative programming, acclaimed tours, and award-winning recordings, the Philadelphia Virtuosi exemplifies the College of Fine Arts' commitment to bring world-class artists to East Texas through the University Series," said Dr. John W. Goodall, associate dean of the college.

"We are proud to open our Golden Anniversary Season with this fine ensemble, founded and directed by former SFA music faculty member Dan Spalding," Goodall continued. More

 

SFA Gardens Les Reeves Lecture Series to feature
South Carolina horticulturist on crinums

The SFA Gardens will host its monthly Les Reeves Garden Lecture Series at 7 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 16, at Agriculture Building, Room 110, located on Wilson Drive on the Stephen F. Austin State University campus. Augustus Jenkins Farmer III will present "It's Crinum Time Again" exploring the South's longtime love affair with bold, enduring crinum lilies. More

 

German Lecture Series this fall

Dr. Christoph Zuschlag will be presenting “Art in Germany Since the 1990 Political (Re)Unification,” Thursday, Sept. 23, in Liberal Arts North, Room 142. The event is free of charge and open to the public.

Zuschlag, is a professor of art history at the University of Koblenz-Landau. He was born in 1964 in Hannover, Germany, and studied art history, history, and archaeology in Heidelberg and Vienna. Zuschlag has interned in museums in Berlin, Vienna, San Francisco and Los Angeles. His areas of interest include modern and contemporary art, art theory, the history and theory of art institutions, as well as, art and art policy in the Third Reich.

In addition, Zuschlag is available to meet with classes and interested student groups during his stay in Nacogdoches, which is the week of the Sept. 20-24. Omicron Delta Kappa and the Office of Student Affairs Programs invite faculty and staff to submit presentation proposals for the second annual ODK SEE Leadership Conference. The conference is scheduled from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 16, in the Baker Pattillo Student Center. Program proposals are due by 5 p.m. Friday, Sept. 17, and can be submitted online. Presentation time slots will either be 25 or 50 minutes long.

The leadership conference is open to all students and will focus on sustainable leadership - skills that students can use while attending SFA and be useful after graduation. The conference keynote speaker is Dr. Tim Elmore, author of the "Habitudes" book series that highlights values-based leadership skills. Looking for a great place this fall to teach your child to swim? We've got it! Campus Recreation is offering swim lessons beginning on Saturday, Sept. 18, through Saturday, Oct. 23. Lessons will be held on Saturdays for six weeks between 9 a.m. and noon (times depend on swim levels). Each lesson will last 30 minutes in length.

This is a great way to get your child involved in aquatics. The fee for all six lessons is $35 per child. Please register at the Campus Recreation Administrative Office by Friday, Sept. 17. The 2010-2011 Service Learning Guide is now available to download from the Student Affairs Programs website. This document provides an overview of local community agencies with a wide variety of needs and opportunities for partnership on a service learning project, as well as guides to implementing service learning projects in the classroom. The guide is available online or by visiting the Student Affairs website and looking under the "Service Learning" header.

   
  Military Science department at Stephen F. Austin State University will host a Lumberjack Battalion Reunion Saturday, Oct. 16. During the event, a breakfast reception will be held from 8:30 to 10:30 a.m. at the Military Science Building. A buffet lunch and presentation will be held from 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at the Baker Pattillo Student Center. Afterward at 2 p.m., reunion attendees will attend the SFA Lumberjack football team play against Central Arkansas, with all attendees sitting in a reserved section of the stadium. More

College of Fine Arts Events and Exhibits

Tuesday, Sept. 14
The internationally acclaimed Philadelphia Virtuosi Chamber Orchestra will open the Stephen F. Austin State University College of Fine Arts’ 2010-2011 University Series at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 14, in W.M. Turner Auditorium on the SFA campus. Under the direction of Daniel Spalding, the orchestra will present a provocative and poetic program that includes featured piano soloist Gabriela Imreh performing Bach’s Concerto in D minor. The event is sponsored by Lehmann Eye Center of Nacogdoches.
 

Sunday, Sept. 19
The Piney Woods Camerata, a conductor-less string ensemble led by the Stephen F. Austin State University string faculty, will present its fall concert 7:30 p.m.  Sunday, September 19, in Cole Concert Hall on the SFA campus. The program will feature Boccherini’s Stabat Mater with vocal soloists, Dr. Jamie Weaver, alumna Monica Hamilton, and Dr. Bruce Fowler, and works by Handel and Corelli. Tickets are $5 for adults, $4 for seniors, and $2 for students.

 

Monday, Sept. 20
The SFA College of Fine Arts and School of Music will present a free concert by the Brian Allen and Hernan Hecht Duo Monday, September 20, at 7:30 p.m. in the Music Recital Hall of the Wright Music Building on the SFA campus. Allen, who writes his own music, is one of the greatest trombonists in the world, according to Dr. Deb Scott, SFA associate professor of trombone. He and percussionist Hecht perform regularly in Mexico and the United States, and are currently touring Texas as they promote their new album. “This will be unlike any other trombone concert you’ve ever heard,” Scott said. The SFA College of Fine Arts and School of Art presents Neal Cox: Grids and Panoramas in the Reavley Gallery of The Cole Art Center @ The Old Opera House, 329 E. Main St. in downtown Nacogdoches. Cox joined the SFA art faculty in 2008, and this is his first solo show in Nacogdoches. The show includes grids composed of watercolors, linocuts or photographs and three types of panoramas. The show will run through Saturday, Oct. 2. Regular gallery hours are 12:30 to 5 p.m., Tuesday through Friday, and 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday. Admission is free.
