Guest bassist to perform at SFA
 The Stephen F. Austin State University College of Fine Arts and School of Music will present Dr. Ilko Rusev in a guest bass recital at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, March 24, in Cole Concert Hall on the SFA campus.
Rusev and pianist Geneva Fung, SFA staff accompanist, will perform original compositions and bass arrangements spanning 300 years, said Dr, Evgeni Raychev, SFA adjunct faculty in the School of Music. "These virtuoso pieces are considered staples in the bass literature and are played worldwide by concert artists." read more

SFA's Original Cast to present folk song revue
The Original Cast, a musical cabaret troupe from the Stephen F. Austin State University School of Theatre, will present four performances of "Blowin' in the Wind: Poets of the Folk Song Era" Thursday, March 24, through Saturday, March 26, in the Downstage Theatre of the Griffith Fine Arts Building on the SFA campus.
The original musical revue by the group's director, Dr. Alan Nielsen, looks at the history of folk music, beginning with songs by Woody Guthrie and Pete Seeger in the 1930s and '40s. The majority of the songs included in the revue come from the 1960s and '70s.
The 14-member cast will perform as soloists and in small ensembles in a coffee house type setting, singing songs such as Janice Ian's "At Seventeen," Simon and Garfunkle's "Sounds of Silence," and Peter, Paul and Mary's "Where Have All the Flowers Gone?" read more |

Teaching Excellence Award for Service Learning
The Teaching Excellence Center and the Service Learning Advisory Board are pleased to announce the first-ever Teaching Excellence Award for Service Learning. One faculty member from each college will be recognized for outstanding use and implementation of a service learning component in a class or classes.
Each faculty member will be awarded a plaque and public commendation at the awards ceremony held during the spring semester of the academic year. The Service Learning Advisory Board will determine the recipient from each college. Candidates for the award must be current full-time employees of SFA with a minimum of 50 percent of their contractual work load devoted to classroom teaching.
Individuals are ineligible while they are currently serving on the University Teaching Excellence Committee or the Service Learning Advisory Board. Candidates may self-nominate for this award. The deadline for The BIG Event job request forms has been extended to Friday, April 1. SFA faculty and staff are eligible to apply for a job for students to complete during the third annual day of service, which will be held Friday, April 29. Potential projects include cleaning, yard work, painting, etc. This day of service is NOT based on socio-economic need, but rather as a way for SFA students to say “thank you” to the campus and community for all of their support.

"Living Juarez" documentary

Since March 2008, close to 7,000 people have died in Cuidad Juarez. There are now an estimated 10,000 security forces patrolling the streets of Juarez where violence continues to escalate. "Living Juarez" tells the story of the real victims in Calderon's Drug War — regular people just trying to survive in a city overrun by senseless violence and corruption. The SFA College of Fine Arts and School of Music will present Dr. Ilko Rusev in a guest bass recital at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, March 24, in Cole Concert Hall. Rusev, who is a graduate of the Bulgaria Music Academy and currently teaches at the University of Antioquia in Bogata, Colombia, has given solo and chamber music recitals in both Europe and South America. For this recital, he will be performing original compositions and bass arrangements encompassing a time period of 300 years. “Third Annual Pen and Pigment” opening reception

The SFA School of Art and Department of English will open the “Third Annual Pen and Pigment” show with a 6 p.m. reception Friday, March 25, in Griffith Gallery on the SFA campus. The show is the culmination of a collaborative project between SFA art and poetry students. The digital prints and poems created in response to one another will be displayed side by side, and the opening will include a poetry reading. The show runs through Wednesday, April 20. Gallery hours are 12:30 to 5 p.m., Tuesday through Friday. |

Frank B. Wickes, director emeritus of the bands at Louisiana State University, will guest conduct the SFA Wind Ensemble in its concert at 7:30 p.m. Friday, March 25, in Cole Concert Hall on the SFA campus. Under Wickes’ baton, the ensemble will perform Percy Grainger’s “Irish Tune from the County Derry,” popularly known as “Danny Boy.” Also included on the program are “Amazing Grace” and Peter Mennin’s “Canzona.” Tickets are $5 for adults, $4 for seniors, $2.50 for faculty/staff and $2 for students. |

Edge of Life: Forest Pathology Art is currently on exhibit in the Ledbetter Gallery of The Cole Art Center @ The Old Opera House, 329. E. Main St. in downtown Nacogdoches. The exhibition, which is a collaborative project between the SFA College of Fine Arts and the Arthur Temple College of Forestry and Agriculture, features artists from the SFA School of Art and ecological artists from across the nation.
