Expert to speak on youth gardening
The SFA Gardens will host its monthly Theresa and Les Reeves Lecture Series at 7 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 17, in Room 110 of the Agriculture Building located at 1924 Wilson Drive. Louisiana State University AgCenter vegetable community/school garden specialist Kiki Fontenot will present "Students Dig It Gardening with Youth." Since being hired by the LSU AgCenter, Fontenot has been busy working with a growing number of statewide schools interested in starting community gardens as tools for promoting healthy eating and to help teach math and science concepts. Fontenot also runs the demonstration garden at Louisiana House, the state's model residence for green and sustainable living.
The Theresa and Les Reeves Garden Lecture Series is generally held the third Thursday of each month at the SFA Mast Arboretum. Refreshments are served by the SFA Gardens volunteers before the lecture with a rare plant raffle held afterward. The lecture is free and open to the public. For more information, contact Greg Grant at (936) 468-1863 or grantdamon@sfasu.edu.

SFA alumna to share entrepreneurial story of California winemaking business
SFA alumna Dianna Novy Lee, co-owner and co-winemaker of Siduri Family Wines and Novy Family Winery, will share her entrepreneurial story, as well as some tips on the etiquette for drinking, tasting and serving wines, at 2 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 17, in Room 133 of the McGee Business Building. Interested students and faculty and staff members are invited to attend.
The 1992 marketing graduate, along with her husband and partner Adam Lee, once shared a dream of moving to California and making superb Pinot Noir from the finest vineyards one could find. With their unique business model and a belief in their specific viticulture practices for growing and harvesting grapes, their dream became a reality with a start-up venture in 1994.
Today, their winery, Siduri Wines, sources grapes from the premier growers and vineyards of California and Oregon and has received national recognition in publications such as Savor Wine Country magazine and The Wine Advocate. From its modest beginnings, the winery has grown to offer more than 25 different Pinor Noir wines each year, and the couple’s business now has the largest Pinot Noir focus of any California winery.

Never skid again: When your car tires start to get worn, find out if you need new ones with this trick. Insert a penny into the shallowest tread so that Lincoln's head is pointed toward the hubcap. If you can see the hair on top of his head, the tread is very worn down, and it's time to buy a new tire. But if Abe's face just peeks out, the tire still has enough grip to keep you safe on the road.
