Research and learning center to prepare students for future
A nationwide initiative designed to increase students' knowledge of science, technology, engineering and math, otherwise known as STEM education, will soon be part of everyday life for some students at Stephen F. Austin State University.
"Across the nation, there is an effort to meet the urgent need for students who are prepared to enter careers in science and mathematics," Dr. Kimberly Childs, interim dean of the college of sciences and mathematics and director of SFA's future STEM Research and Learning center, said. Author, leadership expert to speak Friday
 Join the Teaching Excellence Center and Office of Student Affairs for an afternoon of fun and high energy with leadership expert Dr. Tim Elmore at 3 p.m. Friday, Oct.15, in the BPSC Tiered Classroom.
Elmore is president of Growing Leaders (GrowingLeaders.com) and has consulted with faculty and staff at universities nationwide on the topic of engaging students in the classroom in the age of Facebook. His work includes guidance in implementing classroom strategies to work with generational differences including Millennials, Gen X and Gen Y students.
Elmore is also the author of “Habitudes: Images that Form Leadership Habits and Attitudes.” His message of self-leadership are the basis of the SFA Leadership Program including the Lumberjack Leadership Academy and Freshman Leadership.
The event will introduce attendees to the unique aspects of a wireless generation in our classrooms. The first 50 attendees to RSVP to Michael Preston, director of Student Affairs at mpreston@sfasu.edu will also receive his new book, “Generation iY.”

Office decorating contest for Homecoming
 Homecoming 2010 is around the corner, and we are excited to announce our office decorating contest is back and bigger than ever! We hope that you will help us make the theme "Lights, Camera, Axe 'em" come alive across SFA's campus.
Sign up to participate in one of the following three categories:
Small Office: 0-10 employees
Medium Office: 11-20 employees
Department: 21+ employees
Each category winner will be awarded a treat thanks of Aramark and of course, a bragging trophy. The judging criteria will be based on how well the theme is represented with bonus points for creativity and thinking outside the box!

Annual State Employee Charitable Campaign
It is time for the annual State Employee Charitable Campaign (SECC) benefiting various agencies and nonprofit organizations. Last year SFA employees contributed more than $15,000 to various agencies across Texas. This year our goal is to raise $20,000.
SECC has made it simple for faculty and staff to donate to their favorite agency and nonprofit organizations through an annual campaign. There are two ways employees can give. You can make a one-time donation via cash, check or payroll deduction.
Your donations go to those agencies and nonprofit organizations that you designate. You can contribute to causes that are near and dear to your heart. The minimum donation is $2.
The SECC will continue through Monday, Nov. 1. If you are interested in contributing to the annual SECC, please contact Gloria Montes at (936) 468-2188 or Amanda Horne at (936) 468-3723. |

The MS-ISAC is coordinating a joint webcast with DHS and NCSA, along with several other sector-specific ISACs to discuss strategies on how to promote cyber security awareness at all levels, including government, businesses and academia, with specific advice about how individuals and entities can be actively involved to help facilitate a safe Internet experience. The goal is to help raise cyber security awareness nationwide and empower citizens, businesses, government and schools to improve their cyber security preparedness and help promote a safe Internet experience. This webcast is a must-attend for anyone who wants to know how they can protect themselves, their information and their organization from cyber threats. |

Prior reading is recommended, but you can still benefit from our discussion without it. One faculty member is already implementing ideas from the first readings! Recent works of art in a variety of media are on display in the SFA Faculty Exhibition in The Cole Art Center @ The Old Opera House, 329 E. Main St. in downtown Nacogdoches. Fired Up: Three Regional Artists Take a Contemporary Look at Clay is being exhibited in Griffith Gallery, Room 208 of the Griffith Fine Arts Building on campus through Friday, Nov. 12.
