SAA needs sponsors for annual Burn Shirt event
 Student Activities Association is preparing for the 7th Annual Homecoming Burn Shirt Give-Away. This project promotes SFA school spirit by collecting other university T-shirts from students, faculty and staff and replacing them with a free SFA T-shirt. Half of the shirts collected are placed inside the homecoming bonfire and the remaining shirts are donated to various shelters. SAA is offering sponsorship opportunities to help purchase shirts.

Caddo Culture Club to perform at SFA
The Caddo Culture Club, a non-profit group organized under the Caddo Nation of Oklahoma, will perform traditional Caddo songs and dances at 6 p.m. Oct. 2 at the Stone Fort Museum on the Stephen F. Austin State University campus. An informal dinner and the dance performance are free of charge.
A video documentary, "The Removal of Caddo Indians from their Ancient Homelands," will be screened in the museum throughout the evening. More |

SFA Arboretum to host fall plant sale
 The annual Fabulous Fall Festival plant sale at Stephen F. Austin State University's Mast Arboretum will be from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 2, in the lower arboretum parking lot at 1924 Wilson Drive.
The event features the annual fall plant sale fundraiser benefiting the SFA Mast Arboretum, Pineywoods Native Plant Center, Ruby M. Mize Azalea Garden and educational programs hosted at the gardens.
According to Dawn Stover, Mast Arboretum research associate and sale coordinator, a wide variety of hard to find, "Texas tough" plants will be available, including proven perennials and Texas natives. This year's sale will feature the rare Mexican sugar maple (Acer skutchii), an SFA Gardens exclusive. Some of the better performing and hard to find azaleas will also be available, along with a large selection of drought tolerant plants.

Dr. Mario Ajero, music, co-delivered a presentation at the 2010 College Music Society (CMS) and Association for Technology in Music Instruction (ATMI) National Conferences held in Minneapolis, Minn. The presentation was entitled "Google Wave: A New Paradigm in Internet Communication and Collaboration." Attendees learned how to use Google Wave to improve efficiency in communicating and collaborating with colleagues or students in this online environment. While the Google Wave project's future is unclear, Ajero pointed out ways that teachers could apply these means of collaboration into alternative programs and application for use in educational settings. |

Study abroad to Germany and Belgium interest meeting

Travel to Germany and Belgium to explore contemporary German culture and politics. In Berlin, we'll visit museums to explore Germany's interpretation of its own recent history and reunification, see Sachsenhausen Concentration Camp for perspectives on the Holocaust, examine multiculturalism and diversity in modern Germany via encounters with Turkish immigrants to Germany, explore remnants of the Berlin Wall, and visit key political parties. In Franfurt, we'll explore contemporary German architecture, European Central Bank and other sites of interest. Germany's role in the European Union will be the focus of visits to Brussels, Belgium. We will also examine Germany's role in NATO. Faculty sponsors of the trip are Dr. Louise Stoehr, modern languages, and Dr. Steven Galatas, government. |

The Department of Human Services-Rehabilitation & Counseling Programs will offer free anonymous depression screenings in recognition of National Depression Screening Day (NDSD). Attendees will have the opportunity to complete a written self-assessment and talk one-on-one with a mental health counselor in training. The SFA School of Art and Friends of the Visual Arts will present a one-night screening of The Take, a documentary about Argentinean workers, at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Oct. 1, at The Cole Art Center @ The Old Opera House, 329 E. Main St. in downtown Nacogdoches. Director Avi Lewis and writer Naomi Klein champion a radical economic movement in which unemployed Argentinean factory workers illegally occupy closed factories to restart production on their own and reclaim their jobs. Recent works of art in a variety of media are on display in the SFA Faculty Exhibition in The Cole Art Center @ The Old Opera House, 329 E. Main St. in downtown Nacogdoches. The always-popular annual exhibition, which includes works by the SFA studio art faculty, enables East Texans to see the vast pool of talent within the school. Fired Up: Three Regional Artists Take a Contemporary Look at Clay is being exhibited in Griffith Gallery, Room 208 of the Griffith Fine Arts Building on campus through Friday, Nov. 12.
