Faculty office gets a facelift in 2010 Jack Design Challenge

SFA theatre instructor Jackie Rosenfeld, seated, was chosen for the 2010 Jack Design Challenge, in which students from Donna Pharris’ Human Sciences 310 class redesigned her office in the fine arts building.

A concept designed by Xiaoxi Wang, Ashley Johnson, Jonathan Hartwell, Jamie Haskins and Chelsea Arellano (pictured from left) was chosen by Rosenfeld and executed by the class in four weeks.

Projects included custom paint and shelving, original artwork, and detailed storage solutions. The project was sponsored by the Physical Plant, Student Affairs and Sherwin Williams Paint.

During summer months, 'SFA Today' to be distributed weekly, not daily

Beginning Monday, May 24, "SFA Today" will be distributed weekly every Monday. This change will only be temporary during the summer months. News items must be received by Friday at noon prior to the week of desired inclusion.

SFA Procurement and Property Services and Angelina College Procurement Assistance Center are co-hosting the Deep East Texas Contracting Opportunities Conference Wednesday, May 19, and Thursday, May 20, at the Baker Pattillo Student Center. This is the only conference in East Texas that provides the opportunity for veterans, women and minority-owned businesses and small businesses to interface with state and federal agencies and government prime contractors. The event is free. An Exhibit Hall will open from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Thursday. All SFA staff are invited to visit the Exhibit Hall.

The SFA Gardens will host its monthly Les Reeves Garden Lecture Series at 7 p.m. Thursday, May 20, in the Agriculture Building, Room 110. Dr. Carlos Smith, award-winning Avoyelles Parish county agent from Mansura, La., will present an educational and entertaining lecture titled, “Plant Adaptations.” Smith is an associate professor of horticulture with the Louisiana State University AgCenter. Refreshments are served by the SFA Gardens volunteers before the lecture with a rare plant raffle being held afterward. The lecture is free and open to the public. Judy Pfaff: Drawings and Prints

Created by the SFA School of Art, "Texas National" is celebrating its 16th year on the national scene.

The competition is open to all artists living and working in the United States. This year, juror Judy Pfaff chose 191 pieces by 162 artists.

Both shows run through Saturday, May 22. Regular gallery hours are 12:30 to 5 p.m., Tuesday through Friday, and 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday. (936) 468-1131.

Who Knew?

Martial arts actor Bruce Lee was so fast that many of his scenes had to be shot in 32 frames per second (rather than the normal 24 frames per second) in order to slow down the film so viewers could see his moves.
