Promotion ends Monday, May 31!Certified Online Instructor Commencement, hosted by the Office of Instructional Technology, will be from 1:45 to 3 p.m. Thursday, May 6, in the Wyatt Room of Steen Library. Please mark your calendars to attend this year’s commencement honoring faculty and staff who have completed requirements to become Certified Online Instructors. Guest speaker Dr. Jamie Weaver, School of Music, will share the importance of creating accessible online courses. Weaver will point out perspectives of instructors who develop and deliver online courses, as well as, students who access all of their course materials and engage in interaction online. The deadline for Service Learning Grant applications has been extended to 5 p.m. Friday, May 7. The Office of Student Affairs offers Service Learning Grants each semester to faculty and staff who are interested in implementing a service learning element to their class. Grants are limited to $500 or less, and approximately five to seven are awarded each semester, depending on available funding. Download an application now. Beat the heat and be one of the first 50 fans to receive an SFA Softball SuperFan t-shirt bundle. Game fanatics will also receive an Axe'Em Jacks foam axe along with the shirts. During the game a ticket will be drawn after each inning, and seven lucky fans will receive an exclusive SFA Softball jersey. Applications for the 2010 Lumberjack Leadership Academy are online and ready for students! The Lumberjack Leadership Academy (LLA) is a year-long leadership development program that integrates service learning and leadership development strategies to assist students in developing the skills necessary to lead effectively. There is no cost to participate in this program. Applications for the 2010-2011 LLA will be available online and are due by Friday, May 14. Students must be nominated by a staff member to apply; no letter of recommendation is necessary, as we will contact the staff member by phone to discuss your candidacy for the program. Walter C. Todd Agriculture Research Center and the Department of Agriculture invite you to attend Barnyard Days from 9 a.m. to noon Saturday, May 22, at the SFA's Beef Farm located at 442 CR 123 on Highway 259N. Enjoy baby farm animals, games, a maze, a hay ride, among other activities. Participate in the Best Dressed Farmer Costume contest, which prizes will be given in each age division. Reception and presentation by SFA’s award-winning student Advertising Team Thursday, May 6, at 5:30 p.m. The Cole Art Center @ The Old Opera House 329 E. Main St. The 19-member student team will present their original advertising campaign for client-sponsor State Farm, which was named first runner-up at the American Advertising Federation 10th District Competition. The competition, held in Amarillo, included 17 universities from a five-state area. SFA’s team is composed of students from the School of Art, the Division of Communication and Contemporary Culture, and the Department of Management, Marketing and International Business. Faculty members who oversaw the project were Michael Tubbs (art), Dr. Linda Bond (communication and contemporary culture) and Dr. Marlene Kahla and Barbara Bieber-Hamby (management, marketing and international business.) Joseph Haydn’s The Creation Friday, May 7, at 7:30 p.m. W.M. Turner Auditorium The SFA combined choirs and orchestra, along with faculty and student soloists, will present one of music’s most beloved choral masterworks, Joseph Haydn’s The Creation. Written between 1796 and 1798, the oratorio expresses the Austrian composer's vision of the creation, as told in the Book of Genesis and in John Milton's "Paradise Lost." Tickets are $10 adult, $8 senior, $5 faculty, staff and students. Freedom Train Tuesday, May 11, from 9:30 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. W.M. Turner Auditorium Part of the Children’s Performing Arts Series. Target grades are third through ninth. Tickets are $6 for individuals and $5 for person for groups of 20 or more. TEXAS NATIONAL 2010 and Judy Pfaff: Drawings and Prints The Cole Art Center @ The Old Opera House 329 E. Main St. Created by the SFA School of Art, "Texas National" is celebrating its 16th year on the national scene. The competition is open to all artists living and working in the United States. This year, juror Judy Pfaff chose 191 pieces by 162 artists. Both shows run through Saturday, May 22. Regular gallery hours are 12:30 to 5 p.m., Tuesday through Friday, and 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday. (936) 468-1131. Consumed: Fast Food in the US The Cole Art Center @ The Old Opera House 329 E. Main St. From the eating contests to the mascots designed to appeal to young children, Susana Raab’s 20 photographs capture the influence of the fast food franchise super powers and the saturation of their marketing strategies on everyday American life. The show will run through Saturday, May 15. Regular gallery hours are 12:30 to 5 p.m., Tuesday through Friday, and 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday. |
