NEW! The Sylvans Forestry Club competed in the 53rd Annual Conclave of the Association of Southern Forestry Clubs this past weekend and placed second overall. Participating universities, in the order of placement, in this year’s Conclave were: University of Arkansas-Monticello, SFA, University of Georgia, among others including Virginia Tech, LSU and Texas A&M University. The Conclave consists of 14 contests involving “historic lumberjack or timber sports” and eight contests involving technical subjects in the forestry curricula of accredited forestry programs. SFA students placed first in seven of the 22 contests, second in two contests and third in three contests, thus earning the overall second place finish.
NEW! The Steen Library is a multi-purpose building, dedicated to meeting the information, curricular and research needs of students, faculty and staff at SFA. In the process of becoming a collaborative, integrated environment, Quiet Study somehow became a casualty. The online library survey conducted in the fall 2009, revealed library users’ intense displeasure at the ongoing noise levels in the library and other distracting activities that are counterproductive to individual study. ALCOHOL SCREENING TO BE HELD AT SFA: A screening to help participants recognize the signs of alcohol use disorders will be held from 2 to 6 p.m. Thursday, April 8, in the Human Services Building lobby. The event is part of National Alcohol Screening Day (NASD) and will provide information regarding support and treatment that can be obtained locally. Attendees will have the opportunity to complete a brief, written questionnaire assessing their alcohol use and talk privately with a mental health counselor-in-training about their results and next steps. The program is free and confidential. Last year, an estimated 221,000 people attended a NASD event. Of those that competed a screening form, 45 percent scored in the hazardous or harmful drinking range. For more information, please call (936) 468-1041.
NEW! Costa Rica’s Minister of Culture, Manuel Obregón, will present “Simbiosis: Piano and Rainforest” at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, April 8, in Cole Concert Hall. Admission is free. The performance is sponsored by Latin American Studies and the Department of Modern Languages.

As part of the Maxwell Lecture, Jack Sacco, the Pulitzer-Prize nominated author of Where the Birds Never Sing: The True Story of the 92nd Signal Battalion and the Liberation of Dachau, will discuss his book at 7 p.m. Tuesday, April 27, in the Twilight Ballroom of the Baker Pattillo Student Center. The book chronicles the true story of Joe Sacco, the author’s father, from his first days in boot camp through the invasion of Normandy and the liberation of an infamous Nazi concentration camp. His books will be sold for $25 at the time of the event, and he will sign each book as well. Please download flier for more information. The event is free to the public. Samuel Rothbort now on display in Griffith Gallery, Room 208 of the Griffith Fine Arts Building. The exhibition of paintings and sculptures by the renowned artist marks the first time SFA has displayed the collection of Rothbort’s works recently acquired for its permanent collection, including pieces which have never before been exhibited publicly. Consumed: Fast Food in the US now on display at The Cole Art Center @ The Old Opera House, 329 E. Main St. From the eating contests to the mascots designed to appeal to young children, Susana Raab’s 20 photographs capture the influence of the fast food franchise super powers and the saturation of their marketing strategies on everyday American life. The Original Cast, SFA’s musical theatre-cabaret troupe, will celebrate its 20th anniversary with Almost Legal at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, April 8, through Saturday, April 10, plus a 2 p.m. Saturday matinee. All performances will be in the Downstage Theatre of the Griffith Fine Arts Building on the SFA campus. The 14-member cast will perform highlights from the 20 years’ worth of original musical revues director Allen Nielsen has written for the group. Tickets are $12 for adults and $6 for seniors, SFA faculty and staff and students.
