Join us for the Spring 2010 Division of Communication and Contemporary Culture's Lecture Series beginning Monday, March 29, and ending Thursday, April 8. The lecture series is an opportunity for faculty and graduate students to disseminate their research to the university community. Each presentation lasts 30 minutes followed by 15 minutes of questions and answers. Whether faculty, staff, student, administrator or community member, you are welcome to attend a lecture. Math Games with Larry Cupit to be held 6 p.m. Tuesday, March 30, in the Early Childhood Research Center, Room 214. This hands-on workshop is provided for parents to learn multiple games to play with their children using dice and playing cards to improve their ability to support their children's developing math knowledge.  SFA's Association for Women and Men in Communication will hold an internship workshop from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Wednesday, April 7, in the Boynton Building, Room 104. The free workshop is open to any student interested in internships in news writing, advertising, public relations, photography and broadcast journalism. Representatives will speak about internship opportunities at local organizations and businesses. Topics include general information about their company, what companies look for when selecting interns, the work interns do and the application process. The workshop starts at 11 a.m. with talks by representatives of organizations and businesses followed by a discussion panel. NEW! ALCOHOL SCREENING TO BE HELD AT SFA: A screening to help participants recognize the signs of alcohol use disorders will be held from 2 to 6 p.m. Thursday, April 8, in the Human Services Building lobby. The event is part of National Alcohol Screening Day (NASD) and will provide information regarding support and treatment that can be obtained locally. Attendees will have the opportunity to complete a brief, written questionnaire assessing their alcohol use and talk privately with a mental health counselor-in-training about their results and next steps. The program is free and confidential. Last year, an estimated 221,000 people attended a NASD event. Of those that competed a screening form, 45 percent scored in the hazardous or harmful drinking range. For more information, please call (936) 468-1041.

NEW! As part of the Maxwell Lecture, Jack Sacco, the Pulitzer-Prize nominated author of Where the Birds Never Sing: The True Story of the 92nd Signal Battalion and the Liberation of Dachau, will discuss his book at 7 p.m. Tuesday, April 27, in the Twilight Ballroom of the Baker Pattillo Student Center. The book chronicles the true story of Joe Sacco, the author’s father, from his first days in boot camp through the invasion of Normandy and the liberation of an infamous Nazi concentration camp. SFA music faculty members David Howard, baritone, and pianist Andrew Parr will present Franz Schubert's “Die Winterreise (Winter Journey)" in a faculty recital at 7:30 p.m. Monday, March 29, in Cole Concert Hall.
Based on 24 poems by Wilhelm Müller, the song cycle follows a heartbroken lover as he leaves the town where his beloved lives and falls further and further into desolation. It is a "great psychological study," Howard said.

Steel Band concert at 7:30 p.m. in Cole Concert Hall, Wright Music Building. Directed by Scott Harris, SFA associate professor of percussion, the Steel Band will perform many pop, Caribbean and Latin favorites, including “Baby I Love Your Way,” “Take On Me,” Samba El Gato” and “Maryanne.” In addition, junior percussion majors Nathan Brazell and Chris Thompson will perform a multiple-percussion duet and a marimba arrangement of “Moonlight Sonata.” Tickets: $5 adult, $4 senior, $2.50 faculty & staff, $2 student.

Samuel Rothbort now on display in Griffith Gallery, Room 208 of the Griffith Fine Arts Building. The exhibition of paintings and sculptures by the renowned artist marks the first time SFA has displayed the collection of Rothbort’s works recently acquired for its permanent collection, including pieces which have never before been exhibited publicly. Main St. From the eating contests to the mascots designed to appeal to young children, Susana Raab’s 20 photographs capture the influence of the fast food franchise super powers and the saturation of their marketing strategies on everyday American life. The Original Cast, SFA’s musical theatre-cabaret troupe, will celebrate its 20th anniversary with Almost Legal at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, April 8, through Saturday, April 10, plus a 2 p.m. Saturday matinee. All performances will be in the Downstage Theatre of the Griffith Fine Arts Building on the SFA campus. The 14-member cast will perform highlights from the 20 years’ worth of original musical revues director Allen Nielsen has written for the group. The Bright Ideas Conference highlighting faculty research, scholarship and artistry will be held from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Thursday, April 8, in the Baker Pattillo Student Center.
Children throughout Third World and developing nations are without shoes, and, as Americans, we have taken our easy access to shoes for granted. On Thursday, April 8, the Residence Life department will host “One Day Without Shoes," which is a movement to help bring attention to how we can positively affect these children’s lives with something as simple as a pair of shoes.
