SFA knocks off A&M-Corpus to reach Southland finals for second straight year

Walt Harris scored a team-high 15 points and sank three free throws in the final 33 seconds Thursday to lead SFA to a 60-53 win over Texas A&M-Corpus Christi in the semifinals of the State Farm Southland Conference Basketball Tournament. The win moves the Lumberjacks into the tournament championship game for the second straight season. Read more about the Lumberjacks.

SFA to host Preserve America Workshop

Stephen F. Austin State University will host the Preserve America Workshop: Cemetery Preservation-Tourism on Friday, March 12, in the Baker Pattillo Student Center, Room 2.106.

The workshop begins at 11 a.m. with lectures on cemetery preservation, cemetery access and tourism readiness, followed by a field trip to a local monument company. The workshop will conclude with a headstone identification seminar from 3 to 4 p.m. Read more about the workshop.

March is National Athletic Training Month
Sports safety is a team effort!

Certified Athletic Trainers are unique health care providers who specialize in the prevention, assessment, treatment and rehabilitation of injuries and illnesses. Athletic training is practiced by athletic trainers, health care professionals who collaborate with physicians to optimize activity and participation of patients and clients. This health care profession encompasses the prevention, diagnosis and intervention of emergency, acute and chronic medical conditions involving impairment, functional limitations and disabilities.

Some athletic training services provided include: athletic training facilities; schools (K-12, colleges, universities); amateur, professional and Olympic sports venues; clinics, hospitals, physician offices, community facilities and workplaces (commercial and government).

If you have volunteered this year, the Office of Student Affairs wants to know about it! Faculty and staff are encouraged to turn in volunteer time sheets as soon as possible, as they are eligible for the President’s Volunteer Service Award with a minimum of 100 hours of service in a one-year period. The forms are available online at www.sfasu.edu/studentlife/volunteer.asp. We need a registration form and a time sheet. The time sheet should include all volunteer time from March 2009 to March 2010. Forms should be submitted to sfavolunteers@gmail.com or turned into the Involvement Center on the first floor of the Baker Pattillo Student Center. On October 8, 1909, a powerful earthquake struck northern Croatia, near Zagreb. This event was studied by the famous Croatian seismologist Andrija Mohorovičić who concluded that the earth consists of surface layers above an internal core. To honor his work, the boundary between the crust and the mantle was named the Mohorovičić Discontinuity (or Moho). The SFA geology department will celebrate the 100th anniversary of this event by hosting SFA geophysicist Dr. Wesley A. Brown presentation entitled “A Century of Seismology” at noon Friday, March 12, in the Miller Science Building, Room 335. The presentation will be followed by a hands-on seismological demonstration, which guests will be allowed to handle various equipment used by seismologists.

The Department of Agriculture floriculture program is hosting a fundraiser for the Lauren Alston Memorial Scholarship Endowment by selling bud vases with a variety of beautiful flowers. Friends and family of Alston are helping to establish an endowed scholarship to memorialize her life and the tragic day she passed away. She was an SFA student who died last weekend in an ATV accident. Your purchase of our beautifully arranged bud vases will help contribute to the memorial fund. A minimum donation of $7.50 is requested. The flowers will be on sale from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Friday, March 12, at the Agriculture Building, Room 118. March is National Social Work Month! Did you know that social workers have the education, experience and dedication to help people help themselves whenever they need it. It takes a bachelor's, master's or doctoral social work degree with a minimum number of hours in supervised fieldwork to become a social worker. Read more about social work month!

Marvin Hamlisch’s life in music is notable for its great versatility as well as substance. As composer, Hamlisch has won virtually every major award that exists: three Oscars, four Grammys, four Emmys, a Tony and three Golden Globe awards; and his groundbreaking show, “A Chorus Line," received the Pulitzer Prize.

He is the composer of more than 40 motion picture scores including his Oscar-winning score and song for “The Way We Were” and his adaptation of Scott Joplin’s music for “The Sting," for which he received a third Oscar.

Single tickets: $35 for A seating, $29 for B seating and $17.50 for C seating. Discounts available for seniors, students and youth.

Home, now on display in Griffith Gallery, Room 208 of the Griffith Fine Arts Building. The show, which includes paintings, sculptures and an outdoor installation, explores architectural construction and deconstruction and will run through Saturday, March 13. The Global Artistry of Leo and Diane Dillon now on display in the Ledbetter Gallery of The Cole Art Center @ The Old Opera House, 329 E. Main St. Organized by the National Center for Children’s Illustrated Literature in Abilene, this retrospective by the prolific American husband and wife team includes illustrations for African folktales to Scandinavian epics, from fantasy to science fiction. SFA's Vista

The Vista is one of the original elements of the campus, laid out as the Austin Building was being built. It served the college as a location for graduation ceremonies, State Board of Regents banquets and as the site for the conferring of SFA's first honorary doctor’s degree in the 1940s.

Weather was always a factor in scheduling activities on the Vista; Steen’s inauguration, scheduled for the Vista, had to be moved to the new Shelton Gym.

Steen built the first phase of the University center in 1964. It was not, however, until the expansion of the UC in the late 1960s that the original Vista walk fell victim to the expansions of the Steen years.

The destruction of the Vista triggered great dismay in those interested in the traditions of the college and also to conservationists who wanted to preserve the wooded area at the entrance of the campus. This triggered a defeat for Steen’s idea to place the library out in the trees in the coming years; what became Steen Library marked a shift of the campus to the east.

[At that time the Vista was paved, the entrance of the campus off North Street was changed. The street running in front of the Austin (Old Main) and Rusk Buildings, from the entrance near the Fine Arts Building to the Stone Fort, was known as “Main Street” or "Campus Drive" in the old days.]
