On October 8, 1909, a powerful earthquake struck northern Croatia, near Zagreb. This event was studied by the famous Croatian seismologist Andrija Mohorovičić who concluded that the earth consists of surface layers above an internal core. To honor his work, the boundary between the crust and the mantle was named the Mohorovičić Discontinuity (or Moho). The SFA geology department will celebrate the 100th anniversary of this event by hosting SFA geophysicist Dr. Wesley A. Brown presentation entitled “A Century of Seismology” at noon Friday, March 12, in the Miller Science Building, Room 335. The presentation will be followed by a hands-on seismological demonstration, which guests will be allowed to handle various equipment used by seismologists.
