Ladyjacks open SLC Tournament against Northwestern State

Today's game will be broadcast on radio at Q107.7 FM

The 2010 Southland Conference Co-Champions, and No. 2 seed Stephen F. Austin Ladyjack basketball team will set it sights on the State Farm SLC tournament title, and the league's automatic berth in the NCAA Championships. SFA opens the conference tournament Tuesday against No. 7 seed Northwestern State. The game against the Lady Demons is slated to begin at noon from the Merrell Center in Katy, Texas.

The Ladyjacks are the league's hottest team entering the tournament on a seven-game win streak. SFA looked like it might get caught in the midst of conference logjam three weeks ago, but the Ladyjacks were able to create some separation, and catch Lamar, with some thrilling wins down the stretch.

Lumberjacks to play UTA Wednesday in SLC Tourney

The Stephen F. Austin Lumberjacks will play Texas-Arlington in the first round of the Southland Conference Basketball Tournament at noon Wednesday at the Merrell Center in Katy, Texas.

SFA (21-8) is the No. 2 seed in the tournament. UTA (16-13) is the No. 7 seed. SFA defeated the Mavs 72-65 in the teams' lone meeting this season in Nacogdoches on Jan. 20. SFA enters the game coming off a 65-63 loss to Texas-San Antonio Saturday at William R. Johnson Coliseum. Overall, SFA has won three of its last four games going into the tournament. UTA is a dangerous team because of its offensive firepower.

The Mavericks are led by senior guard Marquez Haynes, who led the league in scoring with 22.8 points per game. Haynes scored 22 points in UTA's loss to SFA earlier this season. UTA takes a three-game losing streak into the tournament, including an 82-79 loss to Texas A&M-Corpus Christi Saturday. But before that stretch, the Mavericks were one of the hottest league teams, winning seven of eight in the conference.
