A Cappella Choir to perform Monday |
||
The A Cappella Choir, the premier vocal ensemble at Stephen F. Austin State University, will present its spring concert at 7:30 p.m. Monday, March 8, in Cole Concert Hall on the SFA campus. Under the baton of Tim King, director of choral activities at SFA, the choir will perform the program it presented while on tour to high schools primarily in the northwest Houston area. Between Sunday, Feb. 21, and Wednesday, Feb 24, the ensemble performed 12 concerts, including evening programs at Blinn College in Brenham and St. Martin's Episcopal Church in Houston. Highlights of the program include Kenneth Leightons' "What Love Is This of Thine" and a choral arrangement of Percy Grainger's "I'm Seventeen Come Sunday." The choir will also present "i thank you God," a new piece by Eric Whitacre that is based on the well known e.e. cummings poem of the same title. |

Campus Recreation offers swim lessons |

Looking for a great place this spring to teach your child to swim? Campus Recreation is offering swim lessons starting Saturday, March 20. They will be held on Saturdays for six weeks, between 9 a.m. and noon. There will be no classes on Saturday, April 3. Each class will last 40 minutes, and sessions will be based on your child's swimming ability. |

The deadline to apply for May graduation is Monday, March 22. Any student planning to graduate in May MUST apply for graduation. To do so, come to the Registrar’s office in the Rusk Building, Room 204. Doctoral and Master students may call (936) 468-2455 or 2465 to find out if their degree plan is on file. They may then either fax or mail their application to the Registrar’s office. The application can be found online at www.sfasu.edu/registrar/docs/graduate_mail_application.pdf. The Ralph W. Steen Library's TIDES Program, originally funded by a National Leadership Grant from the Institute of Museum and Library Services, is profiled on the IMLS Web site this month. The TIDES Program offers free access to a database containing some of the rich cultural and historic resources of Texas and Mexico, which are enriched by K-12 lesson plans and activities. Tuesday, March 9American Ballet Theatre II 7:30 p.m. W.M. Turner Auditorium Handpicked from around the world by the artistic staff of American Ballet Theatre, the classical company of 12 dancers (ages 16-20) will present a varied program in three acts that includes "Interplay," excerpts from "Swan Lake" and "Le Corsaire, and new works created specifically for ABT II. The program is suitable for all ages. SFA faculty and staff are eligible for two half-price tickets in sections B and C ($14.50 and $8.50). |

Tuesday, March 2 – Saturday, March 6 The SFA School of Theatre will present Lorraine Hansberry’s “A Raisin in the Sun” at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, March 2, through Saturday, March 6, in W.M.Turner Auditorium as part of the SFA College of Fine Arts’ University Series. Set in the 1950s on the South Side of Chicago, “A Raisin in the Sun” focuses on the Youngers, an African-American family, and the dreams each of its members is struggling to attain. Allen Oster directs the drama that made history in 1959 as the first play by a black woman to be produced on Broadway. Tickets are $18 for adults, $12 for seniors, $9 for SFA faculty and staff, and $6 for students. Friday, March 5 “Sara’s Book” film premiere (School of Art’s 2010 feature film) at 7 and 9 p.m., Cole Art Center @ The Old Opera House, 329 E. Main St., downtown Nacogdoches. The movie centers on 16-year-old Sara whose world comes crashing down when her parents die in a car wreck. The book of quotes they had given her helps her survive the racially charged early 1970s while she forms a bond with a young man named Ryan. Admission is free, but donations will be accepted. Swingin’ Axes and Swingin’ Aces jazz bands at 7:30 p.m., Cole Concert Hall, Wright Music Building. Included on the Aces’ program is “Tribute to Miles,” which is a medley of famous jazz pieces by Miles Davis, including "So What," "All Blues," "Seven Steps to Heaven" and "Milestones." The Axes’ program will be composed mostly of upbeat Latin and rock influenced charts, including a mambo arrangement of Clifford Brown’s “Blues Walk” and a thickly orchestrated arrangement of Pat Metheny’s “Song for Bilbao.” Tickets: $5 adult, $4 senior, $2.50 faculty & staff, and $2 student.
