The Stephen F. Austin State University College of Fine Arts, School of Art and School of Music will premiere a new feature-length film, "Sara's Book," at 7 and 9 p.m. Friday, March 5, in the Ledbetter Gallery of The Cole Art Center @ The Old Opera House in downtown Nacogdoches. Admission is free and open to the public.

Shot entirely in Nacogdoches and the surrounding area by SFA film students, "Sara's Book" focuses on Sara Blake, a 16-year-old girl whose world comes crashing down when her parents die in a car wreck and she is sent to live in an orphanage.

The one thing she has left from her once-perfect life is a book of quotes given to her by her parents, which helps her survive the racially charged era of the early 1970s when she's forming a bond with a young man named Ryan.

Gloria Simpson, 2009 SFA graduate, and Blake Weir, Sugar Land senior, portray the lead characters.

It is that time of year to show gratitude to our wonderful student workers! The week of April 11 to 17, is Student Employee Appreciation Week!

We greatly depend on our student workers, so why not do something extra special for them during this week?! Suggestions: prepare them a meal, have a party, create “goodie bags," etc.

Student Employment also coordinates a competition/recognition called “Student Employee of the Year!" This is a great opportunity for your department to nominate that one extraordinary student worker!  The winner will be selected by a panel of judges from the nominations received in Student Employment.

The downloadable form will explain how you can participate. The deadline is Thursday, April 15. The winner of “Student Employee of the Year" will receive a very nice certificate, a variety of donated gifts and a plaque that can be placed in his/her employing department!

The 2009 SFA Homecoming Blood Drive was awarded “Event of the Year” at the February Blood Center of East Texas Luncheon and Awards Ceremony.

The SFA Homecoming drive collected 111 units of blood in two days, due in large part to the participation of student organizations.

Michael Preston, Director of Student Affairs; Jamie Bouldin, Assistant Director for Student Life; and Randi Cooper, Student Affairs Graduate Assistant, were present to accept the award.

Always wanted to learn to Ballroom Dance? Have a desire to learn Clogging? We have just the class for you. Please join us for the annual EWC "Dance for the Health of IT" to be held in the Lucille Norton HPE Complex, Gymnastics Room 113. Stan Bobo will instruct basic fox trot, waltz and rumba on Monday, March 1, and Monday, March 8. Cathy Michaels will present basic clogging on Tuesday, March 2, and Tuesday, March 9. All classes meet from 5:15 to 6:15 p.m. All classes are free. One may choose to attend any or all classes. Marvin Hamlisch’s life in music is notable for its great versatility as well as substance. As composer, Hamlisch has won virtually every major award that exists: three Oscars, four Grammys, four Emmys, a Tony and three Golden Globe awards; and his groundbreaking show, “A Chorus Line”, received the Pulitzer Prize.

He is the composer of more than forty motion picture scores including his Oscar-winning score and song for “The Way We Were” and his adaptation of Scott Joplin’s music for “The Sting”, for which he received a third Oscar.

Single tickets: $35 for A seating, $29 for B seating and $17.50 for C seating. Discounts available for seniors, students and youth.

Creative Art Saturday Artistic Clothing class for children ages 6 to 12 from 2 to 4 p.m., The Cole Art Center @ The Old Opera House. Registration is $5 and covers the cost of the materials. Parents may pre-register by e-mailing Matthew Sutherlin at sutherlime@sfasu.edu. Registrations will also be accepted 30 minutes prior to the class, as space permits. Class size is limited to 20.

The show, which includes paintings, sculptures and an outdoor installation, explores architectural construction and deconstruction and will run through Saturday, March 13. Refined VInow on display in the Reavley Gallery of The Cole Art Center @ The Old Opera House, 329 E. The Global Artistry of Leo and Diane Dillon now on display in the Ledbetter Gallery of The Cole Art Center @ The Old Opera House, 329 E. Main St. Organized by the National Center for Children’s Illustrated Literature in Abilene, this retrospective by the prolific American husband and wife team includes illustrations for African folktales to Scandinavian epics, from fantasy to science fiction. The show runs through Saturday, March 13. Admission is free. Gallery hours are 12:30 to 5 p.m., Tuesday through Friday, and 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday.  (936) 468-1131.

American Ballet Theatre II at 7:30 p.m., W.M. Turner Auditorium. Handpicked from around the world by the artistic staff of American Ballet Theatre, the classical company of 12 dancers (ages 16-20) will present a varied program in three acts that includes "Interplay," excerpts from "Swan Lake" and "Le Corsaire, and new works created specifically for ABT II. The program is suitable for all ages. SFA faculty and staff are eligible for two half-price tickets in sections B and C ($14.50 and $8.50).

Thursday, March 11
Orchestra of the Pines’ “Taking Center Stage” concert featuring the winners of SFA’s annual Concerto/Aria Competition, 7:30 p.m., Cole Concert Hall. Tickets are: $15 adult, $12 senior, $7.50 faculty and staff, $5 student.

Bungee Jump

Around 1000 C.E., the first bungee jump was performed on Pentecost Island in the Pacific Archipelago of Vanuatu. A man called Tamalie in the village Bunlap had a quarrel with his wife. She ran away, climbed a tall Banyan tree, and wrapped her ankles with liana vines. Tamalie followed her up the tree. The woman jumped and survived because of the vines tied to her ankles. The man also jumped, not knowing what his wife had done. He died, and the men of Bunlap were very impressed by his performance. Thereafter, the jump transformed into an ongoing death-defying religious ritual called naghol, or "land diving," that inspired modern-day bungee jumping.
