Music Preparatory Division offers summer lessons, camps

Private music lessons and dance classes for children and adults, an adult piano class, Kindermusik camps for newborns through 7-year-olds and group piano sessions for middle and high school students are all part of the summer program offered by the Music Preparatory Division at Stephen F. Austin State University.

The FlexLessons offered by the division enable students to sign up for either four, six or eight private lessons in piano, voice, guitar, flute, harp, percussion, Suzuki and traditional violin, viola, cello, bass, and other instruments as requested, explained Pat Barnett, division director. "We recognize that families' summer schedules are full, so we offer a variety of flexible options between June 1 and Aug. 15. More

 

 

 

 

Music Prep offers summer dance classes for adults, children

Reaching beyond music lessons, the Music Preparatory Division of the Stephen F. Austin State University School of Music will offer dance and movement classes this summer for both adults and children. All classes will be taught in Room 201 of the Norton Health and Physical Education Building.

Beginning June 1, adults can take an eight-session jazz class from 11 a.m. to noon on Tuesdays and Thursdays (skipping June 15 and 17). Heather Samuelson, adjunct faculty member in the Department of Kinesiology and Health Science, will be the instructor. Samuelson's adult tap class will meet at the same times, beginning July 20. Registration for either class is $85.

Nine- to 11-year-olds can enroll in a six-session "Move to Music" course taught by SFA dance professor Libby Rhodes from 3 to 4 p.m. on Mondays and Wednesdays, beginning July 12. More

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Registration still open for Little Jack Rec Camps

The SFA Campus Recreation Department is hosting six, one-week Little Jack Rec Camps during June and July for children between the ages of 5 and 12. Sessions will be June 14-18, June 21-25, June 28-July 2, July 12-16, July 19-23 and July 26-30. The camp will be held from 8 a.m. until 4 p.m. Monday through Friday. More

The exhibition, which includes a wide variety of pieces in an array of media, offers a fascinating glimpse inside the homes of Nacogdoches art collectors who have graciously agreed to share their art works with us, said Christian Cutler, director of SFA galleries. The show will run through Saturday, June 26. Regular gallery hours are 12:30 to 5 p.m. Tuesday through Friday, and 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday. The SFA School of Theatre invites you to its Magical Musical Summer on Stage season that includes two shows, Side by Side by Sondheim and Beauty and the Beast performed in W.M. Turner Auditorium.

The season will open at 7:30 p.m. Friday, June 25, with Side by Side by Sondheim, directed by Dr. Alan Nielsen. The sophistication, wit, insight and heart of master composer/lyricist Steven Sondheim are at the center of this musical revue featuring songs from his landmark shows that revolutionized musical theatre. Company, Follies, West Side Story, A Little Night Music and more are included.

The revue will be presented again at 7:30 p.m. on Saturday, June 26; Friday, July 9; Saturday, July 10; and Friday, July 16. Matinees at 2 p.m. will be presented on Sunday, July 11; and Saturday, July 17. Tickets are $12 for adults and $6 for seniors, students, and SFA faculty/staff. Includes adult language.

The summer season also includes seven productions of Constance Congdon’s Beauty and the Beast, everyone’s favorite tale of love and adventure, directed by ProfessorScott Shattuck. Kids from 8 to 80 will enjoy watching smart, strong Belle and the Beast that adores her come to life on stage. Original music and Belle’s hilariously zany siblings add to the fun and enchantment.

To accommodate the young audience members, evening productions will begin at 6:30 p.m. on Friday, July 2; Saturday,July 3; and Wednesday, July 14. Matinees will be presented at 2 p.m. on Saturday, July 3; Wednesday, July 7; and Thursday, July 8. A 10:30 a.m. show will be offered Tuesday, July 13. All seats for this show are $6, or $5 each for groups of 20 or more!
