The Lumberjack Walk and Roll Web site houses an interactive mapping application that was created to aid pedestrians and wheelchair users to find the most efficient routes throughout the SFA campus. It allows users to map out the best path to and from buildings and parking lots. If individuals are restricted to wheelchairs, the application will assist users to their desired destinations by directing them to the handicapped accessible entryways of all buildings and walkways. The Web site was created by SFA student Allison Bergman for a partial fulfillment for a master’s degree and advised by Dr. Darrel McDonald. Dr. Phil Catton and Dr. Kristina Mao will be co-teaching a Maymester course in China (Shanghai, Qingdao, Beijing) starting in late May. What makes this trip very special and exciting is that the Shanghai World Expo will be in full swing. To help keep costs down for the 20- day trip, they will stay in Chinese universities and eat with their students. They will also visit U.S. businesses in China to explore future job opportunities. Movie Series Advertising: SAA Presents the Twilight Saga this Thursday, Friday and Sunday. There is a special midnight showing on Friday, Feb. 26. We are expecting over 900 students in the course of one weekend. During our weekly Movie Series, we display student organizations' and departments' ads in our movie preview slide show. The cost is $15 per slide for one Movie Series weekend. This includes all movies over the course of that weekend. Do the math anytime…anywhere: The Academic Assistance and Resource Center (AARC) announces a new service to our students: a math online lab. We call it the MOL. Very few learning centers in the nation have an online math lab, and even fewer use their own tutors and their own “home-grown” platform. Andrew Davis, The AARC Math and Physics Program Director, had a vision for online tutoring which would allow any SFA student to post a question on a web page and receive assistance from a tutor via e-mail. Michael Gillen, Steen Library Web Design Specialist, identified a government shareware program that could be adapted for this purpose. With input from a team of Math faculty, the AARC launched the beta version of the MOL. We encourage students to take advantage of this new online opportunity! Students can access the MOL from the AARC homepage.
Refer at-risk students to the Early Alert Program: The SFA Early Alert Program is a valuable resource for faculty, staff, and other members of the SFA community who are experiencing concern for a student due to attendance, academic, and behavioral issues. To refer a student to Early Alert, complete the Early Alert Form at https://forms.sfasu.edu/earlyalert/. The student will then be connected with beneficial resources available on campus in an effort to increase their chances of success at SFA. Feb. 22 through 26 is National Eating Disorder Awareness Week and we have all come together to have adisplay on body image that will incorporate pictures of models throughout the years, a before and after touch up on a magazine cover, measurements of Barbie if she were a real person, comparison of GI Joe measurements with Arnold Schwarzenegger, as well as inspirational quotes and education. There will be a SFA Dietician with interns and students from campus recreation to answer questions on nutrition and healthy exercise. Nacogdoches African-American Heritage Garden Project and ground penetrating radar survey: Ground penetrating radar (GPR) survey will be conducted by archaeologists from the Texas Historical Commission on the property of the Clay Family Home and Zion Hill Baptist Church on Feb. 22 and 23. The survey is part of a project organized by the Nacogdoches African-American Heritage Project to plant a vegetable garden on the property of the Clay Family Home, located next to Zion Hill Baptist Church and Oak Grove Cemetery. Stone Fort Museum to host Black History Month lecture: Avocational archeologist Tom Middlebrook will present, “Raphael D'Ortolan, an African Creole on the El Camino Real de los Tejas,” in a Monday, March 1, luncheon lecture at Stephen F. Austin State University. Hosted by the Stone Fort Museum as the second in a series celebrating Black History Month, the lecture is co-sponsored by the Arthur Temple College of Forestry and Agriculture and will be held from noon to 1 p.m. in the Temple Forestry Building, Room 117. Become a group mentor for The BIG Event, sponsored by the Department of Student Affairs and the SFA Volunteer Program! The quartet was formed in 1997 by Brian Utley, SFA assistant professor of music, and three other saxophone players when they were all students at Louisiana State University. Included on the program are "Restless" by SFA Associate Professor Stephen Lias, "Vonnegut: Suite for Saxophone Quartet" by quartet member John Perrine, and the world premiere of "Sonatina for Saxophone Quartet" by SFA composition student Lance Trevino.
