Raguet wedding gown restoration completed

holbrookThe Stone Fort Museum at Stephen F. Austin State University will host “Afternoon Tea with Anna Raguet,” from 2 to 4 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 13.

Museum staff will serve tea and lemonade with small cakes and other finger food on the museum lawn. The event will celebrate the completion of conservation work on the dress worn by Anna Raguet upon her marriage to Robert Irion in 1840.

Restoration of the gown along with the wedding dress of Raguet’s daughter, Harriet Irion, was made possible through an American Heritage Preservation Grant. Above, Anna Raguet’s great granddaughter, Anna Kathryn Holbrook, models the dress now on display at the museum.

SFA to host Showcase Saturday events for prospective students

Future college students will have the opportunity to experience a taste of campus life during a free, action-packed open-house event at Stephen F. Austin State University in Nacogdoches on two upcoming Saturdays, Feb. 20 and March 27.

Prospective students will get to visit with university faculty and staff, tour the campus and residence halls, and preview academic programs during the last two SFA Showcase Saturday events this academic year.

"There is no better time than Showcase Saturday to visit the beautiful SFA campus and experience first-hand what it's like to be a Lumberjack," said Monique Cossich, executive director of enrollment management.

"Guests are encouraged to visit one-on-one with our faculty to learn more about our quality, personalized academic programs, and our staff will be available to answer questions about everything from admission requirements to financial aid to residence life."

walk across texasJoin us for "Journey Through the Texas Parks: Walk Across Texas 2010," a fun, team approach to logging miles for walking or running that can help keep you on the right track this semester. The theme this year is "Journey Through the Texas Parks," and you will travel as a nature adventurer with Ranger Bob to various Texas Parks across the state. Along the way you will enjoy some fun filled facts, not only about the park, but even the cities you visit. Please join us for the 8-week commitment to exercise. Gather your own team of eight or let us help you find a team. T-shirts will be awarded to the top teams in each of the three categories: Walking, Running and Extreme, as well as to the individual who garners the most miles traveled. Walk Across Texas 2010 will begin Monday, Feb. 15, and run for eight weeks (including Spring Break) and ends Thursday, April 8. Sign up no later than Friday, Feb. 12. For registration and information packets please see the Walk Across Texas Web site.

daffodilsThe SFA Gardens will host its monthly Les Reeves Garden Lecture Series at 7 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 18, in Room 110 of the Agriculture Building. Celia Jones, from Gibsland, La., will present "Granny's Daffodils." Jones restored her grandmother's Louisiana bulb farm and in the process learned that heirloom daffodils, jonquils and narcissus were much more adapted to southern gardens than commercial Dutch daffodils. Jones' grandmother, Annie Lou Holstun Jones, along with her helper Jake Gibson, propagated and cultivated naturalized bulbs gathered from roadsides and old homesteads to earn much needed pocket money during the Depression. She later made enough to help send Jones' father to college. After years of decline, Jones reclaimed the farm and cottage and created a lasting testimony to her grandmother's love. Jones is a member of the Southern Garden History Society and the American Daffodil Society. She and her husband, Steven Templin, are both active foresters. For more information, contact Greg Grant at (936) 468-1863 or grantdamon@sfasu.edu.

Student Foundation Association will host their annual Mud Bugs & Mud Balls Saturday, April 24, prior to the SFA Purple & White football scrimmage. For more information, go to www.sfasu.edu/studentfoundation.

Grants Post-Award Seminar for Faculty & Staff • 2 to 3:30 p.m. Friday, Feb. 12, Wyatt Room, Steen Library. Congratulations on your award! Now where to begin? How do I get the account set-up? What forms do I need to complete for Additional Compensation, Time & Effort Reporting, Budget Revisions? Please join us for refreshments and to discuss any post-award issues and questions you have regarding your award. Please RSVP Susan McDaniel at smcdaniel@sfasu.edu or ext. 6606.
