The American Cancer Society Relay For Life is a life-changing event that gives everyone in communities across the globe a chance to celebrate the lives of people who have battled cancer, remember loved ones lost and fight back against the disease.

At this year's Relay, teams of people will camp out the Nacogdoches Expo Centerfair and take turns walking or running around a track or path. Each team is asked to have a representative on the track at all times during the event. Because cancer never sleeps, Relays are overnight events up to 24 hours in length.

Celebrate - The Survivors Lap
Relay starts with a Survivors Lap, an inspirational time when survivors are invited to circle the track together and help everyone celebrate the victories they’ve achieved over cancer. The Survivors Lap is an emotional example of how Relay participants are creating a world with more birthdays like those of each individual on the track. The master of ceremonies will annouce each survivor's name and how many years he has been free of cancer or fighting cancer. Cancer survivors who wish to sign up for the Survivor's Lap, please visit the Relay's Web site and click on "Register as a Survivor."

Remember - The Luminaria Ceremony
After dark, the Relay will honor people who have been touched by cancer and remember loved ones lost to the disease during the Luminaria Ceremony. Candles are lit inside bags filled with sand, each one bearing the name of a person touched by cancer, and participants often walk a lap in silence. Fight Back - The Fight Back Ceremony
Last, there is a Fight Back Ceremony, where the community makes a personal commitment to save lives by taking up the fight against cancer.

Sierra Gibbons (above) was named MVP of the inaugural Piney Woods Invitational on Sunday, leading the Ladyjacks to a second place finish in the two-day tournament behind Prairie View A&M at Texas Pro Bowl.

Gibbons averaged a 209 on the first day of the competition in the team total pins portion of the tournament, highlighted by a career-best 266 in the third match of the day against Grambling.

Overall, SFA picked up wins in five of eight matches on Saturday and Sunday, but lost the total pins race to the Panthers by a 7886-7761 margin.

"We certainly would have liked to have taken the tournament title, but in the end I think we can look back and say it was a successful weekend," SFA head coach Laura Cramer said. "I think we came out just a little bit nervous early on with it being our first tournament at home, but the girls calmed down and ended up nearly coming away with the first place trophy."

The SFA Volunteer Program’s first Service Saturday of the semester is scheduled for Saturday, Feb. 13. Participants will meet at 8:45 a.m. at the Involvement Center and carpool over to the work site. This month’s Service Saturday will be with Habitat for Humanity helping at their two house lots on Ritchie Street, so participants need to wear long pants and clothes that can get dirty. The Global Artistry of Leo and Diane Dillon Opening • 6 to 8 p.m., The Cole Art Center @ The Old Opera House, 329 E. Main St. Organized by the National Center for Children’s Illustrated Literature in Abilene, this retrospective by the prolific American husband and wife team includes illustrations for African folktales to Scandinavian epics, from fantasy to science fiction. The show runs through Saturday, March 20. Admission is free. Gallery hours are 12:30 to 5 p.m., Tuesday through Friday, and 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday.
