Join us for "Journey Through the Texas Parks: Walk Across Texas 2010," a fun, team approach to logging miles for walking or running that can help keep you on the right track this semester. The theme this year is "Journey Through the Texas Parks," and you will travel as a nature adventurer with Ranger Bob to various Texas Parks across the state. Along the way you will enjoy some fun filled facts, not only about the park, but even the cities you visit. Please join us for the 8-week commitment to exercise. Gather your own team of eight or let us help you find a team. T-shirts will be awarded to the top teams in each of the three categories: Walking, Running and Extreme, as well as to the individual who garners the most miles traveled. Walk Across Texas 2010 will begin Monday, Feb. 15, and run for eight weeks (including Spring Break) and ends Thursday, April 8. Sign up no later than Friday, Feb. 12. For registration and information packets please see the Walk Across Texas Website. The SFA Gardens will host its monthly Les Reeves Garden Lecture Series at 7 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 18, in Room 110 of the Agriculture Building. Celia Jones, from Gibsland, La., will present "Granny's Daffodils." Jones restored her grandmother's Louisiana bulb farm and in the process learned that heirloom daffodils, jonquils and narcissus were much more adapted to southern gardens than commercial Dutch daffodils. Jones' grandmother, Annie Lou Holstun Jones, along with her helper Jake Gibson, propagated and cultivated naturalized bulbs gathered from roadsides and old homesteads to earn much needed pocket money during the Depression. She later made enough to help send Jones' father to college. After years of decline, Jones reclaimed the farm and cottage and created a lasting testimony to her grandmother's love. Jones is a member of the Southern Garden History Society and the American Daffodil Society. She and her husband, Steven Templin, are both active foresters.
