New Exercise Physiology Lab opened yesterday. The Department of Kinesiology and Health Science would like to announce the opening of the new Exercise Physiology Lab, now located in the "old" Early Childhood Building, Room 112. Most notably, the lab features a metabolic cart (O2 consumption and caloric expenditure), electro-cardio gram (cardiac stress test), hydrostatic weighing tank (body composition), environmental chamber (heat stress research), as well as a wide array of other equipment.
Texas American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM) 2010 • Eric Jones, Dawnella Rust and Jay Thornton will be accompanying 12 Kinesiology and Health Science students to the two-day Regional Texas ACSM 2010 Conference held in Houston this March. Kinesiology students, Jared Graham and Nathan Frischman, will be presenting recent hydration research performed in the Exercise Physiology Lab Environmental Chamber.  The SFA Volunteer Program’s first Service Saturday of the semester is scheduled for Saturday, Feb. 13. Participants will meet at 8:45 a.m. at the Involvement Center and carpool over to the work site. This month’s Service Saturday will be with Habitat for Humanity helping at their two house lots on Ritchie Street, so participants need to wear long pants and clothes that can get dirty. Service Saturdays take place three times per semester and are open to students, faculty and staff. They are designed to provide a different service opportunity each month out in the community. Sign up in the Involvement Center on the first floor of the Baker Pattillo Student Center or e-mail sfavolunteers@gmail.com. This is a great way to get your students involved in a service activity as well as providing an easy way for faculty and staff to give back! The SAA Movie Series is an easy way for you to advertise your services and/or events to over 900 students in the course of one weekend. During our weekly Movie Series, we display student organizations' and departments' ads in our movie preview slide show. The cost is $15 per slide for one Movie Series weekend. This includes all movies over the course of that weekend. All arrangements must be made and all slides received no later than 5 p.m. Wednesday of the week prior to the desired air weekend.  Become a group mentor for The BIG Event, sponsored by the Department of Student Affairs and the SFA Volunteer Program! On Friday, April 23, hundreds of students will head out into the city and county to complete service projects as a BIG “thank you” to the community for its support of our students. This is a great way for students to give back, and faculty and staff can be a part of the event by serving as a mentor for a team of students.
To participate, faculty or staff will need to attend a mandatory mentor meeting (either 4:30 p.m. on Thursday, April 15 or noon on Friday, April 16) as well as be available to participate in The BIG Event from 11:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. on Friday, April 23. STILL TIME! The Teaching Excellence Center is extending the call for nominations for individuals wishing to present teaching innovation posters at the Bright Ideas Conference. These innovations can be single assignments, activities, demonstrations, etc. We will sponsor ten posters at the Bright Ideas Conference. Our TEC Associates (one representative from each college, OIT and the Library) will pick the top ten from those submitted. We will also pay for printing of the poster. The Music Preparatory Division at SFA will offer a children’s choir this spring, under the direction of Brandon Nichols, SFA graduate student in choral conducting. Monica Hamilton, SFA vocal performance graduate student, will assist Nichols.

Her obsession with singing began when she was still a child. That obsession--together with a ravishing natural voice, an extraordinary talent, and unwavering determination--led to one of the most illustrious operatic careers of the 20th century. What's more, when most eras can boast four or perhaps five superstar sopranos and even fewer superstar mezzo-sopranos, for more than three decades and for millions of opera lovers in the United States and around the world, Grace Bumbry was both. Her unique sound and her gripping stage presence, once experienced, simply cannot be forgotten.
