You never know when you will need to know about the AARC. You could be a faculty member talking to a struggling student in your office or a staff member who happens to meet a student despondant over his grades. A few details about what we offer will arm you with the information that could really make a difference.
The AARC is an award-winning learning center with over 150 tutors; covering over 260 different courses. Last year the AARC served over 4,000 students and recorded over 50,000 visits!
We offer four different kinds of tutoring:
Weekly Private Sessions: A student can have multiple tutors for different subjects. To secure an appointment, the student uses an on-line registration system accessed from the AARC homepage. If we are all booked up in the subject a student desires, then the student can put his or her name on a waiting list. We will call the student when an appointment opens, which it often does.
Walk-In Tables: We almost always have a table for Math, Chemistry, English, Physics and Astronomy. Check out the AARC homepage for our hours.
SI Groups: Everyone loves SI! These groups are led by a student selected by the professor. Each week the SI Leader meets with the professor and shares tips with the group.
On Line: The OWL (on-line writing lab) offers real-time chatting with a tutor, learning modules for specific SFA writing assignments and submission of papers for review. Look for the link on the AARC homepage.

The SAA Movie Series is an easy way for you to advertise your services and/or events to over 900 students in the course of one weekend. During our weekly Movie Series, we display student organizations' and departments' ads in our movie preview slide show. The cost is $15 per slide for one Movie Series weekend. This includes all movies over the course of that weekend. All arrangements must be made and all slides received no later than 5 p.m. Wednesday of the week prior to the desired air weekend. SIGN UP! The Teaching Excellence Center is excited to announce the Spring Teaching Circles. Our new Circles begin TODAY starting with "Issues in Higher Education" at 4 pm with Ken Collier, Political Science. Other Circles will include "Teaching - What a Great Gig!," "The Parenthood Juggle," "Teaching Millenials" and "Assessment Issues and Possibilities." The QEP Steering Committee would like to express our thanks to all the faculty, staff, students, alumni and community supporters of SFA who took time to read and rank the QEP final four topics. The magnitude of participation in the selection process bodes well for an enthusiastic reception to SFA's QEP theme when it is announced. Please watch for that announcement to be forthcoming from the university leadership.
Become a group mentor for The BIG Event, sponsored by the Department of Student Affairs and the SFA Volunteer Program! On Friday, April 23, hundreds of students will head out into the city and county to complete service projects as a BIG “thank you” to the community for its support of our students. This is a great way for students to give back, and faculty and staff can be a part of the event by serving as a mentor for a team of students.
To participate, faculty or staff will need to attend a mandatory mentor meeting (either 4:30 p.m. on Thursday, April 15 or noon on Friday, April 16) as well as be available to participate in The BIG Event from 11:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. on Friday, April 23. The Cole Audiology Lab is offering hearing evaluations for all faculty and staff, including family and friends. The lab sells, repairs and services hearing aids, too. Our hearing aids are fully digital and reasonably priced. Services are available to the community and the lab will bill Blue Cross Blue Shields, as well as Medicaid. Omicron Delta Kappa, SFA’s leadership honor society, is now accepting applications for membership. If you know of some exceptional students who are involved on campus and have maintained a high GPA, please encourage them to apply! ODK recognizes the top students that excel in both the classroom and in leadership at SFA. ODK recognizes achievement in five areas: student activities and organizations, athletics, fine arts, student media and government. ODK assists students to develop themselves at an elite level by offering presentation and peer review opportunities for its members. They also coordinate events such as the SEE Leadership Conference, Dresses for Dreams, Student Leadership Awards and Top 23 Freshmen. Juniors, seniors and graduate students with leadership experience and a 3.0 or higher GPA are eligible. Applications are available at the Involvement Center and outside Room 3.302 in the Baker Pattillo Student Center and are due by Friday, Feb. 12.
The Teaching Excellence Center is calling for nominations for individuals wishing to present teaching innovation posters at the Bright Ideas Conference. These innovations can be single assignments, activities, demonstrations, etc. Posters from the past Bright Ideas Conference are displayed at the TEC. We will sponsor ten posters at the Bright Ideas Conference. Our TEC Associates (one representative from each college, OIT and the Library) will pick the top ten from those submitted. We will also pay for printing of the poster. This year there will be a kick-off reception from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. to celebrate the accomplishments of all the participants. Nominations should include the nominee's name, department, and a 300 to 400 word description of the teaching innovation and its goals and outcomes.
Ask a Question, Save a Life, Learn QPR • The SFA Counseling Center is offering several suicide intervention training sessions throughout the semester for faculty, staff and students. In less than two hours, you can learn helpful information on how to intervene and safe a life. The first training session for Spring 2010 is Monday, Feb. 15, from 1 to 3 p.m. Seating is limited so register by calling (936) 468-2401. The trainings are located in the Counseling Center on the third floor of the Rusk Building.

Creative Art Saturday Puppet-making workshop for children • ages 6 -12, 2-4 p.m., The Art Center @ The Old Opera House. Registration is $5 and covers the cost of the materials. Home • Griffith Gallery, Room 208 of the Griffith Fine Arts Building. The show, which includes paintings, sculptures and an outdoor installation, explores architectural construction and deconstruction and will run through Saturday, March 13. Gallery hours are 12:30 to 5 p.m., Tuesday through Saturday. Admission is free.
Refined VI • The Cole Art Center @ The Old Opera House, 329 E. Main St. The biennial juried art metals/jewelry competition and exhibition runs through Saturday, March 20. Admission is free. Gallery hours are 12:30 to 5 p.m., Tuesday through Friday, and 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday.
