SFA to host annual Back Lot Bash to introduce new students to community

The Nacogdoches County Chamber of Commerce and Stephen F. Austin State University will welcome the SFA Class of 2014 at the annual Back Lot Bash Thursday, Sept. 2, behind the William R. Johnson Coliseum.

The event follows SFA Freshman Convocation, which begins at 5 p.m. in the coliseum, and provides an opportunity for local businesses and university and community organizations to share information with the students, many of whom are recent arrivals to Nacogdoches. SFA’s six colleges will also be at the Bash to share information about their academic programs. More

Graduate film program at SFA boasts success in its infancy

Stephen F. Austin State University students got their first taste of filmmaking back in 1978, when Professor William E. Arscott began to offer courses in cinematography through the School of Art.

As the years went on, and the popularity for the classes grew, and so did the curriculum.

"We always had a graduate program in art, and so we'd have some students who went on, and more and more we organized the program to independent feature movie makers or working the industry," said Arscott, explaining the beginnings of the Master of Fine Arts Degree in Filmmaking, which received its accreditation and became an official program offered by the film department last year. Manning to lead college advisory board

Melissa Manning of Spring, global public relations director for IHS Inc., has been named president of SFA's College of Liberal and Applied Arts Advisory Board.

Manning has more than 20 years of experience as a marketing communications professional and is based in her company's Houston office. IHS is a leading source of information and insight in pivotal areas that shape today's business landscape: energy, economics, geopolitical risk, sustainability and supply chain management.

A 1988 graduate of SFA, Manning has been a member of the advisory board since 2008. She also is a member of the Texas Public Relations Association, Women in Energy, the American Marketing Association, the British American Business Council and the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo. More

Parking garage, traffic office now open

The University Police Department is pleased to announce the opening of the new Parking and Traffic Office located inside the new Wilson Drive parking garage.

Because of the new office’s more centralized location, university police now will be more accessible to students, faculty and staff. The Parking and Traffic Office issues all student, faculty, staff and visitor permits; provides parking enforcement and assistance; and handles parking appeals.

All parking requests now will be forwarded to the new Parking and Traffic Office instead of the police department. Any department, college or group needing special event parking needs to coordinate through the new office. More

New siren equipment to be installed today

The university will be installing updated equipment to the Outdoor Siren System today. After the equipment is installed, technicians will be testing the system. The test will include the activation of the outdoor siren, both the weather alert and the active emergency alert, on several occasion through out the day. The outdoor siren is a vital part of the Notification System, and the university wants to ensure it's properly functioning. Should you have any questions about the test, please contact the University Police Department at ext. 2252.

SFA President invites faculty, staff to annual academic meeting

I invite you to attend the Stephen F. Austin State University faculty and staff meeting on Thursday, Aug. 26, in the Grand Ballroom located in the Baker Pattillo Student Center.

Refreshments will be served beginning at 7:30 a.m. in the Twilight Ballroom, and the meeting will begin at 8:30 a.m. in the Grand Ballroom. New members of the SFA community will be introduced, accomplishments of the previous year will be highlighted and plans for the upcoming year will be discussed.

I hope that you can join us for this gathering as we celebrate the beginning of a new academic year.

Learn more about SFA's Early Alert Program

The Early Alert Program is a comprehensive approach to academic and behavioral intervention. The Early Alert Program consists of tracks for early intervention including the Behavioral Track to address behavioral/classroom management issues, the Attendance Track to address class attendance issues, and the Academic Performance Track to address concerns regarding a student’s academic performance.

Faculty and staff members, as well as students, can make a referral to the Early Alert Program by completing the Early Alert Form. Go to form now. The Early Intervention Coordinator reviews each referral and appropriate parties are contacted.

For more information about the Early Alert Program and the Office of Student Rights and Responsibilities, please visit the main website and the Early Alert website. Also, please feel free to contact Whitney Koltonski, early intervention coordinator, at (936) 468-2703 or denneywk@sfasu.edu.

Musician Gordon Summer got the nickname "Sting" because he once performed wearing a black-and-yellow rugby shirt that bandmates said made him look like a bumblebee.
