SAA needs sponsors for annual Burn Shirt event

Student Activities Association is preparing for the 7th Annual Homecoming Burn Shirt Give-Away. This project promotes SFA school spirit by collecting other university T-shirts from students, faculty and staff and replacing them with a free SFA T-shirt. Half of the shirts collected are placed inside the homecoming bonfire and the remaining shirts are donated to various shelters.

SAA is offering sponsorship opportunities to help purchase shirts.

Sadler named player of the week

Stephen F. Austin State University sophomore Laura Sadler has been named the Southland Conference Soccer Offensive Player of the Week, according to a Tuesday announcement by league officials. Sadler's honor is the first of her career and marks the fourth consecutive week for a Ladyjack to pick up a player of the week award.

Sadler scored both the game-tying and game-winning goals in SFA's 2-1 overtime win at Arkansas-Pine Bluff, leading the Ladyjacks to their fifth straight win. The game marked the second two-goal performance in Sadler's career as well as her second game-winning goal. More

October is Cybersecurity Awareness Month. In recognition, the MS-ISAC has partnered with SANS to offer three FREE security awareness webcasts. They include "Future Trends in Network Security" from 1 to 2 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 13; "Securing the Human" from 1 to 2 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 20; "Protecting Your University Data" from 1 to 2 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 27. The location of the webcast will be announced through SFA Today announcements. You may view the newsletter at www.sfasu.edu/itsecurity.

   

The flu vaccine is being offered beginning now, through Friday, Oct. 1. Because of the limited number we currently have available, we will not be administering the vaccine during the week of Oct. 4, but will resume giving the shot beginning Monday, Oct. 11, until we run out.

Cost: $20 (cash or check only)
Location: Health Services Clinic
Time: 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.
When: Sept. 27, through Oct. 1, resuming on Oct. 11, until supply is depleted

   

Save a Life--Ask a Jack!

Counseling Services is offering QPR, a suicide prevention training, from 3 to 5 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 30, in the Rusk Building, Room 333. This training is open to all interested faculty, staff and students. To reserve a spot please call (936) 468-2401.

Fonzworth Bentley and Marc Williams will be giving life lessons about how to be a true Gentleman. Are you a G or a Gent? Come find out at this interactive program. You will have the opportunity to ask questions and learn some helpful tools to becoming a better Gentlemen. Ladies you are invited as well. Come let the young men of SFA know what type of Gentlemen you want to see walking around campus. The Office of International programs is hosting the first of several monthly presentations for the Global Gateway events. A 30-minute presentation on Mexican culture by one of SFA’s international students will take place beginning at noon Wednesday, Oct. 6, in the Baker Pattillo Student Center, Tiered Meeting Room. Drinks and authentic Mexican food will be provided free of charge. The presentation will be followed by an informal discussion and question and answer period. Screening of The Take

The SFA School of Art and Friends of the Visual Arts will present a one-night screening of The Take, a documentary about Argentinean workers, at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Oct. 1, at The Cole Art Center @ The Old Opera House, 329 E. Main St. in downtown Nacogdoches. Director Avi Lewis and writer Naomi Klein champion a radical economic movement in which unemployed Argentinean factory workers illegally occupy closed factories to restart production on their own and reclaim their jobs. Admission is free. The film is sponsored in part by SFA’s Latin American Studies interdisciplinary program. For more information, please call (936) 468-1131.
 

Orchestra of the Pines Concert

SFA’s Orchestra of the Pines will open its 2010-2011 season with Fantastic Heroes, a concert featuring works by Russian composers, at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 2, in Cole Concert Hall. A highlight of the program will be guest artist Ning An of Lee University performing Rachmaninoff’s Second Pia no Concerto. The orchestra will also present works by Glinka and Prokofiev. Tickets are $15 for adults, $12 for seniors and $5 for students.

 

Ongoing Exhibition

Recent works of art in a variety of media are on display in the SFA Faculty Exhibition in The Cole Art Center @ The Old Opera House, 329 E. Main St. in downtown Nacogdoches. The always-popular annual exhibition, which includes works by the SFA studio art faculty, enables East Texans to see the vast pool of talent within the school. The show runs through Saturday, Oct. 30.  Regular gallery hours are 12:30 to 5 p.m., Tuesday through Friday; and 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday.  For more information, please call (936) 468-1131.

 
Ongoing Exhibition

Fired Up: Three Regional Artists Take a Contemporary Look at Clay
is being exhibited in Griffith Gallery, Room 208 of the Griffith Fine Arts Building on campus through Friday, Nov. 12. The exhibition brings together new works by some of the best clay sculptors in Texas and Louisiana: Ken Baskin of McNeese State University in Lake Charles, La., Barbara Frey of Texas A&M Commerce, and Janet Kastner of the University of Texas at Austin.
