SFA logs another record enrollment

Fall semester enrollment at Stephen F. Austin State University is up approximately 1 percent to 12,954 students, surpassing the all-time enrollment record set one year ago.

The number of SFA students attending classes increased by 109 between fall 2009 and fall 2010. Summer enrollment also rose slightly, increasing 0.4 percent in summer I and 2.6 percent in summer II. The fall SFA headcount marks the 11th consecutive reporting period with an enrollment increase.

“I am extremely proud that SFA is able to report another record-high enrollment for the fall 2010 semester,” said Dr. Baker Pattillo, university president. “I want to express my appreciation to the enrollment management team, as well as the entire SFA faculty and staff, for their tireless efforts to recruit and retain top-quality students to our university.” More

Cemetery interpretation workshops and lecture set for October

Nancy Adgent, an independent scholar specializing in cemetery studies, will present two area workshops and a lecture in early October as part of the Preserve America cemetery interpretation project.

The first of the two workshops on identifying grave marker types, styles and motifs will be held from 10:30 a.m. to noon Friday, Oct. 1, at the Augus Theater/Museum Theater located at 110 E. Columbia St. in San Augustine. A tour of the San Augustine City Cemetery will be included. The second workshop is scheduled for 10:30 a.m. to noon Saturday, Oct. 2, at the Heritage Center of Cherokee County located at 208 S. Henderson St. in Rusk. A tour of the Rusk City Cemetery will be part of that workshop.

Adgent's lecture titled "Cemeteries and Heritage Tourism" will be held at 6:30 p.m. Friday, Oct. 1, in Room 142 of the Dugas Liberal Arts North building at SFA. More

SFA Arboretum to host fall plant sale

The annual Fabulous Fall Festival plant sale at Stephen F. Austin State University 's Mast Arboretum will be from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 3, at the intramural field on Wilson Drive .

"As usual, a great selection of rare, unusual, native, and Texas-tough trees, shrubs, vines, herbaceous perennials, grasses and groundcovers will be available," said Dawn Stover, Mast Arboretum research associate.

This year's sale will feature an outstanding selection of maples including connoisseur Japanese maples, southern sugar maple, and the rare chalk maple, plus the hard to find native chinquapin. Almost all of the plants are produced at SFA by the staff, students and volunteers.

Proceeds from the plant sale help support the SFA Mast Arboretum, the Ruby Mize Azalea Garden, the Pineywoods Native Plant Center and educational programming.

The public is encouraged to arrive early and bring a wagon. For more information, call (936) 468-4404 or visit the website and click on "upcoming events."

Mr. and Miss SFA award nominations due Nov. 1

The deadline to nominate SFA seniors for the Mr. and Miss SFA honors is Monday, Nov. 1. Nomination forms are available online at www.sfaalumni.com and at the SFA Alumni Association office in the Tracie D. Pearman Alumni Center.

Nominations may come from faculty, staff members or from an officer of a student organization of which the nominee is a member. Selections are made by a committee of faculty, staff, students and alumni. Finalists will be contacted for interviews.

To be eligible, SFA seniors must have completed 90 credit hours, with 48 of those hours completed at SFA, and must have a minimum 2.5 grade-point average. Candidates also must be within 12 months of graduating from SFA and enrolled in the 2011 spring semester. Also, candidates must not have received this type of award from SFA or any other college or university.

The Mr. and Miss SFA title is an award presented each year by the SFA Alumni Association to exemplary students who well represent and promote SFA. Recipients are selected based on their scholarship, participation and leadership in academic and co-curricular activities, citizenship and service and loyalty to the university.

The Mr. SFA Award was established in honor of the late Stan McKewen, a 1934 SFA graduate. The Miss SFA Award was established in honor of Arnodean Covin, who was named Miss SFA in 1940, 1941 and 1942.

The awards are scheduled for presentation at an SFA basketball game during the spring semester. For more information, contact Katy Crawford with the SFA Alumni Association at (936) 468-3407.
