SFA grads co-chairing Nacogdoches County Relay for Life

The kick-off Relay For Life meeting Tuesday night introduced two new co-chairs to oversee and prepare for the all-night event to be held Friday, March 4, 2011. Kinnie Parker, SFA 1999 health science graduate, and Derek Head, SFA 2009 health science graduate, will be working alongside Jenna Lewis, American Cancer Society Community Manager based in Lufkin.

Relay For Life offers everyone in the Nacogdoches community and county to participate in the fight against cancer. Teams camp out at the Nacogdoches County Expo Center and take turns walking or running around a path. Because cancer never sleeps, Relays are overnight events, and each team is asked to have a representative on the track at all times.

There's a place for everyone at Relay! To find out more information about Relay For Life, please call Lewis at (936) 615-6267 or visit the Nacogdoches County Relay For Life website to learn more about the event.

Mr. and Miss SFA award nominations due Nov. 1

The deadline to nominate SFA seniors for the Mr. and Miss SFA honors is Monday, Nov. 1. Nomination forms are available online at www.sfaalumni.com and at the SFA Alumni Association office in the Tracie D. Pearman Alumni Center.

Nominations may come from faculty, staff members or from an officer of a student organization of which the nominee is a member. Selections are made by a committee of faculty, staff, students and alumni. Finalists will be contacted for interviews.

To be eligible, SFA seniors must have completed 90 credit hours, with 48 of those hours completed at SFA, and must have a minimum 2.5 grade-point average. Candidates also must be within 12 months of graduating from SFA and enrolled in the 2011 spring semester. Also, candidates must not have received this type of award from SFA or any other college or university.

The Mr. and Miss SFA title is an award presented each year by the SFA Alumni Association to exemplary students who well represent and promote SFA. Recipients are selected based on their scholarship, participation and leadership in academic and co-curricular activities, citizenship and service and loyalty to the university.

The Mr. SFA Award was established in honor of the late Stan McKewen, a 1934 SFA graduate. The Miss SFA Award was established in honor of Arnodean Covin, who was named Miss SFA in 1940, 1941 and 1942.

The awards are scheduled for presentation at an SFA basketball game during the spring semester. For more information, contact Katy Crawford with the SFA Alumni Association at (936) 468-3407.

Accomplishments

Dr. David Creech, Stephen F. Austin State University professor emeritus of agriculture and 2006-2007 Regents Professor, received the Honorary Lifetime Membership Award at the annual Texas Nursery and Landscape Association awards banquet in August. The award was presented in recognition and appreciation of Creech's many years of service and contributions to the Texas Nursery and Landscape Association and fellow industry professionals by the board of directors of the Texas Nursery and Landscape Association.

Eddy Edmondson, president of TNLA, spoke in his awards introduction about Creech's extensive international travels and his work with SFA Gardens. He also noted the infectious nature of Creech's passion for the industry and the impact he's had on his students, many of whom have gone on to be leading horticulturists in Texas.

The SFA Men's Faculty and Staff Club will have its fall picnic on from 3 to 8 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 7, at Liberty Hall. Dinner to be served at 5:30 p.m. We're going to celebrate this fall by enjoying the food and drinks of a traditional Oktoberfest.

The price of the picnic is FREE; however, donations will be accepted. Mark your calendar, make your reservation (see below), bring a colleague or friend and join us at the Oktoberfest. New faculty and staff members are especially welcomed.

The SFA Men's Faculty and Staff Club was started over 50 years ago with the goal of providing the men at SFA an opportunity to sit down and socialize with colleagues in a casual environment away from campus. There are only two meetings a year (fall and spring). Our only agenda is having a good time getting to know colleagues across campus and eating dinner. RSVP to next month's event at mludorf@sfasu.edu.
