Professor of art to be featured at Houston Center for Contemporary Craft
This summer, Houston Center for Contemporary Craft will present the fourth show in its Texas Masters Series featuring Piero Fenci, SFA professor of art, and his collection titled "Battlement."
Fenci is the fourth artist to receive this honor, awarded to established career artists working in Texas who have made a significant impact in the craft field. Fenci was chosen for his outstanding involvement in the Texas craft community, his dedication and excellence in teaching, the innovative qualities of his work and his exceptional craftsmanship.
As the 2012 Texas Master, Fenci’s work is featured in a solo show and a printed color catalog, and the artist will serve as a juror of the CraftTexas 2014 biennial exhibition.
An artist talk and opening reception will be held at 5:30 p.m. Friday, June 1, at the HCCC. Fenci also will present a demonstration from 2 to 5 p.m. Saturday, June 2, at the Glassell School of Art Ceramics Studio, 5101 Montrose Blvd. in Houston. read more |

The infographic in the spring issue of Sawdust magazine was featured on UMagazinology, a blog featuring news and observations on university magazines. The spread was designed by Rhonda Crim, director of publications for the SFA Alumni Association.

This committee is part of an initiative to promote client-sourced enhancements to baseline Banner and their specific role is to review modifications from clients, provide feedback and make recommendations on their applicability for baseline. |

Little Jack Rec Camp Registration

The Little Jack Rec Camp program is a fun recreational, motivational and educational adventure for children ages 5-12. All activities have a noncompetitive nature and camp staff members will work with campers to improve basic skills used in most sports. This is a non-sport specific camp and all activities are geared towards beginner and intermediate skill levels. Jim Towns Mentoring Professorship
Nominations are being accepted for the Jim Towns Mentoring Professorship. The professorship will assist in stimulating and promoting a mentoring culture within the university community while honoring the mentoring legacy of Dr. Jim Towns.
All nominations and supporting materials must be submitted to the Office of Development by June 1. A nominee will be selected this summer, and the professorship will be awarded at the beginning of the 2012 fall semester. Read more about the professorship. |

As part of its monthly film series, the SFA School of Art and Friends of the Visual Arts will present a free, one-night screening of “Stitched” at 7 p.m. Friday, June 1, at The Cole Art Center @ The Old Opera House, 329 E. Main St. The 72-minute documentary follows three art quilters as they prepare for and compete in the nation’s largest quilt show. |

The School of Art will open “Two Cities: A Path to Faith (1983-1992),” an exhibition of photographs by the Rev. Howard Castleberry, with a 6 to 8 p.m. reception on Saturday, June 2, at The Cole Art Center @ The Old Opera House,
Castleberry is the current rector at Christ Episcopal Church in Nacogdoches, but he worked as a staff photojournalist for the Houston Chronicle from 1983 to 1998, receiving a Pulitzer Prize nomination for a photograph he took while in Somalia. The exhibition will run through Saturday, June 30, in the Reavley Gallery. Admission to the opening and exhibition is free. |

“Stephen Mueller (1947-2011): In Memoriam” will be on display in the Reavley Gallery of The Cole Art Center @ The Old Opera House through Saturday, May 26. The show, which was curated by renowned art critic Dave Hickey (“TEXAS NATIONAL 2012” juror) features several works by Mueller, who is known as a color field painter. |
