Outline of Research Procedures for Experimenters Using the Psychology Participant Pool

Return to Department Research front page.

Research procedure steps for experimenters once an experiment has been approved (by the faculty instructor, the IRB, thesis committee, etc):

1. Obtain a research sign up sheet by downloading it off the Internet.

2. Determine which testing rooms would be appropriate for your study (based on size, equipment, and availability). You may view this information on the monthly room information and availability page which is accessible online.

3. Complete the Research Sign-Up Sheet, indicating your preference of rooms and all other information related to your study. Call or personally tell the department research assistant your room reservation preferences. During the summer of 2006, the assistant will be Bit Gay, the departmental secretary. She will be in the main office, ED 215, 1:00-5:00 each afternoon. Her phone number is 468-4402. She will assign research room reservations on a first-come, first-served basis and update the online monthly schedule.

4. Your experiment will be posted online within 24 hours (excluding weekends). If you have never registered as a researcher, you will be added in the system as such. Participants may then begin signing up for your study. They will be able to register for your study up until 1 hour before the study begins.

5. Within the hour before your study begins, go to the website for our experiment management system (sfasu.sona-systems.com). Locate your experiment and click on the title of it. Click on "Timeslots." This will give you a listing of all participants who have signed up. Print this page and use it as your attendance sheet. Check off the names of all who participated. This is the only way in which they will receive credit for their participation. If you experience difficulty printing off this information, please contact the research assistant immediately or contact Dr. Stahl in the department office. One of them will help you obtain the information you need.

6. Run your experiment.

7. Make a copy of your attendance sheet for your records and give a copy to the research assistant. She will then grant credit to those who participated and assess penalties for those who did not show up. The department research assistant will inform relevant instructors of the no-shows. DO NOT ENTER THIS INFORMATION YOURSELF! WE MUST KEEP ACCURATE RECORDS, AND THE ONLY WAY TO DO SO IS FOR ONE PERSON TO BE ENTERING ALL SUCH DATA!

Notes for special circumstances:

1. If for some reason you can not make it to your experiment (illness, emergency), return to the experiment management system (sfasu.sona-systems.com) and cancel your sign-up. To do this, click on "My Schedule/Credits" at the top of the page. Click on the name of the study, then cancel your participation. If you have problems getting this to work, contact the research assistant or Dr. Stahl as soon as possible.
