Graduate Admissions

Application Forms (in PDF format):

Thank you for your interest in our Psychology graduate program. On these pages, you will find links to the current Graduate Bulletin and assorted application forms and information sheets. To begin the application process, please complete all relevant forms and return them to the appropriate SFA offices.

SFA will accept applications for graduate admission at any time. However, the Department of Psychology discourages applications for spring semester admission. Based on prerequisite coursework, students entering in the spring could not enroll in Experimental Design. As a result, the program would take 1.5 years to complete rather than the intended 1 year.

Admission requirements are as follows:

Required coursework:

PSY 133 - General Psychology, or its equivalent
PSY 330 - Psychological Statistics, or its equivalent
PSY 341 - Experimental Psychology, or its equivalent

Plus 9 additional hours in social and behavioral sciences

Applicants must present a minimum 3.0 overall G.P.A. and a minimum factor score* of 1300 for clear admission. Applications that do not meet these minimum criteria will be considered on a case-by-case basis.

*Factor score = (G.P.A. * 100) + G.R.E. combined score (Verbal + Quantitative)

The department awards assistantships on an annual basis, committing all funds available for the coming academic year. The first review of applications occurs around May 1, with consideration being given based on G.P.A., G.R.E. score, and date on which application materials are received. All things being equal, applications received earlier will be given higher priority. The Department offers a number of 20 hr/wk graduate assistantships on the basis of merit to in-state and out-of-state students. Out-of-state students who receive a 20-hour assistantship are eligible to pay in-state resident tuition. Although there is no guarantee, a few assistantships are typically available for one of the two summer terms.
