Touring company to bring 'Romeo and Juliet' to SFA

NACOGDOCHES, TEXAS - Although written over 400 years ago, the lines, "O Romeo, Romeo, wherefore art thou, Romeo?" are easily recognizable to most English speakers, as is the entire plot of William Shakespeare's famous play from which the lines come.

"However, relatively few have had the opportunity to see the story of the star-crossed lovers acted out on stage by a troupe of professional actors," said John W. Goodall, interim dean of the Stephen F. Austin State University College of Fine Arts. "That's one of the reasons we are so pleased to bring Aquila Theatre Company's presentation of 'Romeo and Juliet' to W.M. Turner Auditorium at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 21, as part of our University Series."

Over the past 15 years, Aquila Theatre Company has become one of the most widely respected touring companies, leading the New Yorker to write, "Aquila's productions are beautifully spoken, dramatically revealing and crystalline in effect."

Also known for its bold innovations, Aquila is taking a fresh approach to the dramatization. Each actor in the company will learn every part of "Romeo and Juliet," and at every performance, the audience will decide which actors will play which role, often against type, gender and age.

According the company's press package, the innovation was inspired by Shakespeare's all-male company of players quickly assuming multiple roles in several productions. "We want our audiences on the edge of their seats fully engaged and committed, desperate to follow the play to its well known end, rediscovering Shakespeare and sharing in the communal experience of bold, courageous and risk-taking theatre."

Aquila's "Romeo and Juliet" is sponsored in part by Regions Bank of Nacogdoches. Prior to the performance, there will be a 7 p.m. informative talk in Griffith Gallery across the hall from Turner Auditorium in the Griffith Fine Arts Building.
