| Speaker biography: |
After service in the United States
Air Force during World WarII, Mr. Wright was elected to
the Texas legislature in 1947. After a single term he returned
to his hometown of Weatherford and served as mayor from
1950 until 1954, when he was elected to the first of his
eighteen consecutive terms in the U.S. House of Representatives.
Mr. Wright was majority leader of the house during the
Ninety-fifth through the Ninety-ninth Congresses and Speaker
during the One Hundredth and One Hundred First Congresses.
He has taught courses at Texas Christian University on
American politics and is the author of several books recounting
his experiences in public life. |
