Students to Help With Congressional Debate on SFA Campus

Stephen F. Austin State University is partnering with two East Texas television stations in hosting an Oct. 18 debate in which candidates for the First Congressional District will outline their positions on challenges facing our country.

Jamie Fussell, The Pine Log editor, will be on a three-member panel that will question incumbent Max Sandlin, a Democrat, and his Republican challenger Louis Gohmert during the 7 p.m. event in Turner Auditorium. On-campus sponsors, the Young Democrats and the College Republicans, will serve as greeters and ushers.

KTRE and KLTV are organizing the debate in conjunction with SFA.

Joe Terrell, a journalist with TylerÕs KLTV, will moderate. The one-hour format will include opening and closing statements from each candidate, as well as questions from the journalist panel. Reporters from KTRE and The Daily Sentinel also will be on the panel.

KTRE and KLTV will videotape the debate for broadcast at 7 p.m. Oct. 19.

A second debate will be held Oct. 25 at the University of Texas at Tyler. Both debates are free and open to the public.
