Members of the Stephen F. Austin State University SwinginÕ Axes, Irving sophomore Mark Perry and Euless senior Jason Ferrell, perform during a recent concert. The SwinginÕ Axes and SwinginÕ Aces will present a concert at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 12, in W. M. Turner Auditorium.  

 

SFA jazz bands present concert

Jazz enthusiasts can treat themselves to an evening of big band, swing and contemporary music by attending the Stephen F. Austin State University SwinginÕ Axes and SwinginÕ Aces concert at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 12, in W. M. Turner Auditorium.

SFA assistant professors Gary Wurtz and Deb Scott direct the SwinginÕ Axes and SwinginÕ Aces, respectively.

Wurtz said the SwinginÕ AxesÕ portion of the program will feature student soloists on arrangements made famous by The Boss Brass and The Stan Kenton Orchestra.

The SwinginÕ AcesÕ program includes Rich MattesonÕs ÒThis OneÕs for SnoopsÓ and Bob LowdenÕs arrangement of ÒHereÕs That Rainy Day,Ó which Scott describes as Òa beautiful ballad featuring the trombone section and Tracy Ward, Nacogdoches post graduate student, on piano.Ó

The concert is a joint presentation of the SFA College of Fine Arts and the Department of Music.

Tickets are $5 for adults, $4 for seniors and $2 for students and children.
