SFA art faculty exhibition opens

East Texans can meet members of the Stephen F. Austin State University Department of Art and view the facultyÕs latest works at the opening of the Faculty Exhibition Friday, Sept. 17, at The Art Center, 329 E. Main.

A reception hosted by Nacogdoches Junior Forum will begin at 6 p.m., and Dr. David Lewis, chair of the Department of Art, will introduce members of the department at 7 p.m. Admission is free.

ÒWe enjoy this opportunity to interact with the larger East Texas community, and IÕm particularly excited to introduce the newest members of our faculty and staff,Ó Lewis said.
Assistant professors Teresa Kirchner and Chris Talbot, who joined the department in August, each have works included in the exhibition.

Kirchner, who specializes in drawing and painting, has previously taught at Miami University in Ohio and at Indiana University where she received her Master of Fine Arts degree. She received her Bachelor of Fine Arts from Southwest Missouri State University. KirchnerÕs works have been shown in exhibitions in Louisiana, Massachusetts, Vermont and throughout the Midwest and are included in collections at Wright State University in Ohio and the University of Michigan.

Talbot received his Master of Fine Arts in photography and digital media from the University of Houston and his Bachelor of Fine Arts in photography from Brigham Young University. His photographs have received numerous awards and been included in publications such as the New York Times, Washington Post and Inscape Magazine.

Other faculty members whose works will be displayed include Regents Professors William Arscott, Charles Jones and Mary McCleary; professors Peter Andrew, John Daniel, Piero Fenci and Gary Frields; associate professor Robert Kinsell; assistant professors Amy George, Anita Powell and Jennifer Sholtis; instructor Gary Parker; and adjunct faculty Marsha Blount, Les Butler, Chet Geiselman and Scott Runnels.

Lewis will also introduce three other new hires: Bradley Bailey, assistant professor of art history, Shannon Bailey, SFA gallery director; and Donna Lipschutz, administrative assistant.

Bradley Bailey received his doctoral and masterÕs degrees in art history from Case Western Reserve University/Cleveland Museum of Art Joint Program and his bachelorÕs degree from Rutgers University. He has taught at Cleveland State University, Baldwin-Wallace College in Borea, Ohio, the University of Akron, the Cleveland Museum of Art and Case Western Reserve University.

Shannon Bailey received her masterÕs degree in art history and museum studies from Case Western Reserve University/Cleveland Museum of Art Joint Program and her bachelorÕs degree in arts museum studies and history from Juniata College in Huntingdon, Penn. She has worked at the Cleveland Museum of Art, the Huntingdon County Historical Society in Pennsylvania and the Juniata College Museum of Art.

Lipschutz joined the department in August. She was previously employed as an administrative assistant in the College of Forestry.

The SFA Faculty Exhibition continues through Oct. 24. Regular gallery hours are 12:30 to 5 p.m. Tuesday through Sunday.

The exhibition is a joint presentation of the SFA College of Fine Arts and the Department of Art. It is sponsored in part by Dorothy Carsey Sumner, Nacogdoches Junior Forum, SFA Friends of the Arts and SFA Student Government Association.
