Virginia Scotchie exhibition to open at SFA
The Stephen
F. Austin State University College of Fine Arts and Department
of Art will present the opening of ÒVirginia Scotchie: Object Maker
SeriesÓ Wednesday, Sept. 8, in Griffith Gallery. The opening will
be accompanied by two presentations by the artist.
Scotchie, who is beginning her 12th year as coordinator of the ceramics
area at the University of South Carolina, will speak about career development
for emerging artists at 6:30 p.m. in Cole Concert Hall. Afterward,
the exhibition will open next door in Griffith Gallery with a reception
hosted by Nacogdoches Junior Forum. Cole Concert Hall is located in
the Tom and Peggy Wright Music Building, and Griffith Gallery is located
in Room 208 of the Griffith Fine Arts Building.
At 2:45 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 9, Scotchie will present a slide lecture in Room
106 of the Art Building, located off Wilson Drive.
Each of the events is free and open to the public.
The exhibition, which will run through Thursday, Oct. 14, includes ceramic sculptures
that are abstractions of personal objects given to the artist.
Scotchie said her borrowing and reformation of objects is intended to invite
the viewer to look closer and find beauty and intrigue in the humble, ordinary
and familiar objects that surround us.
Scotchie has received invitations to create work in many international art centers,
including the Australian National University in Canberra, Australia; Studio Art
Center International in Florence, Italy; the European Ceramic Work Centre in
Ôs Hertogenbosch, Netherlands; and Tainan National University for the Arts in
Taiwan.
Her work can be found in numerous permanent and private collections throughout
the country and has been reviewed recently in American Ceramics, New Art Examiner,
American Craft, Sculpture and Ceramics Monthly.
In 2003, Lark Press published her book, ÒSetting Up Your Ceramic Studio: An Inside
Look.Ó
The exhibition is sponsored in part by Nacogdoches Junior Forum, SFA Friends
of the Arts and SFA Student Government Association. Regular hours for Griffith
Gallery are 12:30 to 5 p.m., Tuesday through Sunday. Admission is free.
