University President To Speak at Chamber Luncheon


Dr. Tito Guerrero III, Stephen F. Austin State University president, will give an update on the state of the university as the guest speaker for the Nacogdoches County Chamber of Commerce Fourth Friday Luncheon at noon Friday, Oct. 28, at the Fredonia Hotel.

Guerrero is in his fifth year as president of SFA. Before coming to Nacogdoches, he served for four years as president of Colorado State University-Pueblo. Previously, he served as provost and vice president for academic affairs at Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi, where he worked for almost 21 years, rising through the academic ranks from assistant professor to full professor, and later serving as dean of students as well as the schoolÕs first vice president for student affairs.

Guerrero currently serves as a member of the board of directors for the American Association of State Colleges and Universities and the American Council on Education. He also serves as a member of the Board of Visitors for Air University, United States Air Force. Previously, Guerrero served as an adviser to the U.S. Agency for International Development; the Costa Rican government; the U.S. Centers for Disease Control; the American Educational Research Association; the National Institute of Education; the Administration for Children, Youth and Families; the Bureau of Education for the Handicapped; the Florida Department of Education; and the Missouri Coordinating Board for Higher Education.

Among awards Guerrero has received are the Kellogg National Fellowship, a Ford Foundation Graduate Fellowship, a National Science Foundation Fellowship, an Educational Policy Fellowship, an Academic Leadership Academy Fellowship from the American Association of State Colleges and Universities, and selection as a participant in the GovernorÕs Executive Development Program of Texas.

Guerrero has traveled from Antarctica to Zimbabwe and to all seven continents. His civic involvements have focused on economic development initiatives, day care and mental health services, youth programs, and interventions to prevent school dropouts.

He received his doctorate in administration, planning and social policy from Harvard University. He also received a Certificate of Advanced Study in educational administration from Harvard. His masterÕs degree in secondary and health education is from the University of North Texas. He holds a bachelorÕs degree from Texas A&M University.
