Bands to present concert

NACOGDCHES, TEXAS - Landscapes, literature and liturgy are just some of the inspirations behind the music to be performed by the Stephen F. Austin State University Chamber Winds and Symphonic Band during their concert at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 25, in W.M. Turner Auditorium.

David W. Campo, director of both bands, said the program is "an eclectic mix of band masterworks culled from the standard repertoire."

The Symphonic Band will open its portion of the concert with a march by Henry Fillmore, "The Klaxon," a piece Fillmore wrote for the 1930 Cincinnati Automobile Show. The band will also perform Percy Grainger's "Ye Banks and Braes O' Bonnie Doon" and W. Francis McBeth's "Of Sailors and Whales," which draws on five characters from Herman Melville's "Moby Dick."

The Chamber Winds will perform two sacred pieces, Martin Mailman's "Liturgical Music for Band" and Franz Biebl's "Ave Maria." Fred J. Allen, SFA director of bands, will guest conduct "Ave Maria," and members of the Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia fraternity will provide the voices.

The Chamber Winds will also perform portions of Carl Orff's "Carmina Burana" and Alberto Ginastera's "Danza Final," the last movement of "Estancia Suite.".

The concert is a joint presentation of the SFA College of Fine Arts and School of Music. Tickets are $5 for adults, $4 for seniors and $2 for students. For tickets or more information, please call (936) 468-6407 or (888) 240-ARTS.
