University jazz bands 'getting back into the swing of things'


NACOGDOCHES, TEXAS -The Stephen F. Austin State University College of Fine Arts and School of Music will present the Swingin' Axes and Swingin' Aces jazz bands in concert at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 11, in W.M. Turner Auditorium.

Dr. Gary Wurtz, SFA assistant professor of music and the Axes' director, said the theme of the bands' opening concert is "Getting Back into the Swing of Things."

Under the direction of Dr. Deb Scott, SFA assistant professor of music, the Swingin' Aces will perform John Cotltrane's "Impressions," Bob Mintzer's "Bright Lights" and Maria Schneider's "Smooth Talk." The Aces will also perform Chuck Mangione's "Land of Make Believe" featuring Ross Langdon, Wylie sophomore, on flugelhorn.

The Swingin' Axes will perform "I'm Beginning to See the Light," a tune made popular by Frank Sinatra; Buddy Rich's "Basically Blues" and Frank Foster's "You Got It."
