Faculty flute recital


NACOGDOCHES, TEXAS - The Stephen F. Austin State University College of Fine Arts and School of Music will present Christina Guenther in a faculty flute recital at 4 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 10, in the Music Recital Hall of the Wright Music Building.

Guenther, SFA visiting assistant professor, will present chamber music for flute by W.A. Mozart, Ernst von Dohn‡nyi, Robert Maggio and Gareth Farr.

Violinist Jennifer Dalmas, SFA assistant professor; violist Shane Almendarez, Marshall graduate student; and cellist Evgeni Raychev, SFA lecturer; will join Guenther on the opening number, "Flute Quartet in D Major, KV 285" by Mozart.

Ron Petti, SFA assistant professor, will accompany Guenther on Dohn‡nyi's "Aria for Flute and Piano, Op 48, No. 1," and Alan Scott, SFA adjunct faculty, will join her in performing Maggio's "Traveling Songs for Flute and Guitar."

Guenther and SFA assistant professor Scott Harris, marimba, will close the program with Farr's "Kembang Suling."

Guenther joined the SFA faculty in August. In addition to her teaching responsibilities, she performs with the Stone Fort Wind Quintet and serves as principal flutist of the Orchestra of the Pines.

She has appeared as soloist, chamber and orchestral musician throughout the United States and in Central and South America. Her performances at festivals include the Florida Flute Association, the Society of Composers, Inc., and the Flute Society of Kentucky as winner of the Young Artist Competition.

While earning her master's and doctoral degrees at Florida State University, Guenther was awarded an Outstanding Teaching Assistant Award and was the woodwind director of the Tallahassee Symphony Youth Orchestra.

She has served as a high school flute clinician in Florida and Texas and co-founded the Austin Summer Flute Camp in 2004. Guenther has recorded numerous compact discs with Rutgers University and Florida State University ensembles and is published in Flute Talk magazine.
