Regents approve land sale, set recreation fees

The Stephen F. Austin State University Board of Regents approved the sale of a house and two acres of land from a 152-acre tract at 1256 FM 2664 in Nacogdoches. The university received several offers on the property and selected the best offer of $140,000 during the meeting Saturday.

Regents also approved a recreational sports fee beginning spring 2006. The Texas Education Code allows a recreational sports fee not to exceed $120 per fall or spring semester and $60 per summer session of six weeks or less. SFA students approved the fee in 2004 during a referendum proposing the construction of a recreational sports facility.

According to the approved fee schedule, students enrolling in seven or more credit hours during the fall and spring semesters will be charged $120, while students taking six hours or fewer will be charged $50. During summer sessions, the fee will be $60 for students enrolling in six or more hours and $25 for students taking less than six hours.

New tennis courts on the corner of Starr Avenue and Wilson Drive, the first phase of the student recreation center construction, will be ready for use in January.

Regents also discussed the university's use of technology, and at a future committee meeting, will hear results from an information technology summit to be held Dec. 13 for key administrators at SFA. According to Dr. Mary Cullinan, provost and vice president for academic affairs, a result of the summit will be very clear recommendations regarding technology at SFA.

Regents met in executive session to discuss real estate and to interview candidates for vice president for finance and administration.
