Student awarded Shapiro Scholarship


NACOGDOCHES, TEXAS Ð Cory Jones, a Stephen F. Austin State University junior majoring in radio-television, has been chosen to receive the Mike Shapiro Memorial Scholarship Award, a $900 stipend awarded for academic accomplishments and demonstrated potential for success in radio-television.

Jones is an active staff member at KSAU, the university radio station, and plans a career in commercial radio. He attended Ferris High School where he was a member of the National Honor Society, participated in athletics and was sports editor of the newspaper. He is the son of Carmen Jones of Ferris.

At SFA, Jones is an honor student and received the 2005 Best Radio Sportscast award from the Texas Intercollegiate Press Association.

The scholarship is supported by donations from regional broadcasters, including KTRE television and others interested in encouraging dedicated students to pursue commercial broadcasting careers.

Members of the awards committee are Dr. Al Greule, Sherry Williford and Dr. Joe Oliver, chairman. Contributions may be made to the Shapiro Scholarship Fund at SFA through the Department of Communication.
