The Stephen F. Austin State University Equestrian Team started the 2004-2005 season with its top two Western finishes in the teamÕs three-year history.

 

 

SFA Equestrian Team scores big in first two meets of season


NACOGDOCHES, TEXAS Ð The Stephen F. Austin State University Equestrian Team began the 2004-2005 season with its top two Western finishes in the teamÕs three-year history. SFA took 15 women to compete at the Intercollegiate Horse Show Association competition Western show hosted by West Texas A&M University. Those riders competed in beginner through open levels of Western horsemanship and an open level of reining competition.

In the first show of the weekend, the SFA team tallied 21 points, tying with West Texas A&M for third place in the team competition. The 2004 national championship team, Texas A&M University, was first with 35 points and Oklahoma State University was second with 25 points.

Individual competition results for SFA students were Jennifer Childers, fifth place, and Lindsey Gaston, second place, Novice; Nicole Lovelace, first place, and Amy Hilfer, fourth place, Beginner; Debra Szczepanski, second place; Intermediate I; Lauren Macomber, second place, Kacey Reamer, fourth place, Virginia Jackson, fifth place, and Traci Hill, sixth place, Intermediate II; and Kimberly Young, third place, Open.

In the second show, SFA riders were even more successful. The team broke its record of top finishes set in the previous show by winning the Reserve High Point Team Award just four points behind Texas A&M University, the High Point Team.

Results were: Lindsey Gaston, sixth place, Novice; Nicole Lovelace, first place, and Heather Sowers, fifth place, Beginner; Debby Szczepanski, fifth place, Intermediate I; Lauren Macomber, first place, Virginia Jackson, third place, Traci Hill, fifth place, and Kacey Reamer, sixth place, Intermediate II; Jennifer Wiggins, first place, and Pamela Corn, fourth place, Advanced; and Jamie Melgares, second place, and Kimberly Young, fourth place, Open Horsemanship.

Team coaches are Dr. Joe Gotti, SFA agriculture professor, and Berry ÒJPÓ Porter, SFA sophomore from Spring.
