Local third grader cast in SFA theatre production
NACOGDOCHES, TEXAS - SheÕs not one of the regulars within the Stephen F. Austin
State University Department of Theatre, but third grader Alexandria Glazener
is fitting right in as she portrays The Girl in Luigi PirandelloÕs ÒSix Characters
in Search of an Author.Ó The drama is being presented tonight through Saturday,
Nov. 20, at 7:30 p.m. in W. M. Turner Auditorium.
Glazener, the daughter of Dennis and Charisse
Glazener, has appeared in several productions at Lamp-Lite Playhouse
Theatre, including "Bye, Bye, Birdie," "Annie Get Your
Gun," "Anne of Green Gables" and "The Wizard of
Oz."
The young actress said this is her first dramatic role, however, and
it has brought some challenges. She is on stage almost the entire play
but must rely on her facial expressions and body movements to convey
the character's emotions since she has no spoken lines.
Dr. Rick Jones III, SFA assistant professor of theatre and director
of the play, said Glazener is handling the role very well.
ÒAlex is bright and creative, she understands subtlety and she works
hard. ThatÕs everything I can ask.
Within the drama, Glazener plays one of the six characters who interrupts
a theatre company's rehearsal in an effort to find an author who can
present their story and assist them in becoming fully actualized.
"Six Characters" achieved international acclaim with Georges
Pito‘ff's Paris production in 1923, and it is the most recognized of
Pirandello's plays, according to Ruth Ramsey, Irving senior and the
production's dramaturg.
The creator of 40 plays and hundreds of short stories, Pirandello is
recognized throughout the world as Italy's most significant modern
playwright, Ramsey said. He became a member of the Accademia d'Italia
in 1929 and won the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1934.
The drama is a part of the SFA Department of Theatre's Mainstage Series
and is sponsored in part by Tipton Ford. It is recommended for mature
audiences.
Tickets are $10 for adults and $5 for seniors
and students.
